ColorTherapy: Unexpected Color

Name: E1-6 (Dusty Lilac)
Brand: Fine Paints of Europe

Why don’t you paint your closet soft pink? The possessor of this beautiful clean loft is a fine artist, who requires pure white walls that won’t interfere with her work. But just for fun, we thought to add a little color inside the closet.

The color is Fine Paints of Europe E1-6, a nice dusty lilac, and the effect is of opening a plain box to find striped satin and a jewel inside. How sweet.

There's practically nothing in the closet, so that makes this project a pretty little detail. For me, it would not matter. I generally don't see the wisdom in decorating a spot that's really not visible. Organizing, yes, or for a walk-in closet where you prepare for the day at some length, but if it turns you on or brightens your day to open a door or cabinet and see something super-magical for 30 seconds, maybe your room is too boring, or your clothes are.

Never underestimate the ability of AT commenters to hone in on the most negative possible aspect of a simple, charming little project. It's exhausting.

BTW: I love the pink. Well done.

I like it. And it would brighten my day to open the door and see the pink.

If a pink closet brightens your day for 2 seconds, go for it - or whatever works for you. Seems a silly little thing, but I know I used to have my favorite Far Side cartoons taped on the inside of my kitchen cabinet doors, and they never failed to make me smile whenever I opened a door.

Beyond making one feel good to look at, pale pink is an amazing background to any skin tone, so a pale pink walk-in closet is a great idea for that reason too.

KTG - I certainly see your point, but I think that if someone has a closet that needs painting anyway due to scuffed walls or general dinginess (as I do) - why not paint it a happy color rather than plain white or Navaho Beige?

I have a walk-in closet that I've been thinking about painting soft pink just for how it complements any skin tone. The closet is completely empty now until we put floors and organizers in, but I plan to make it a very special place in my home. A grown up version of my childhood fort, if you will.

One wall will be covered in framed art and frivolity - all the bits and pieces and etsy finds that I wouldn't want strewn around the "shared" areas of my house.

I painted my laundry closet pale pink a few weeks ago. With one wall of pink up, I thought it looked great. With four walls of pink up, it looked terrible. TERRIBLE! It was like a cave...a glowing, candy cave. I immediately mixed up a new color and painted it a sunny, pale yellow.

bepsf (and others) - if you are going to paint the inside of the closet anyway, sure, this is one way to go. My closets are dark and full. I think this is one of those improvements that looks great in a walk-in, where you are lit up, and might spend time getting dressed, it would be worth an extra effort to make it nicer.

My general point stands that I tend to keep the things that make me smile outside the closets, and if something amuses me in there, it's something that belongs in there. As far as the example given - due to professional reasons, the owner keeps kind of a bland palette to the rooms, which is one thing I addressed. It's also shown with a single coat and a hanger wadded with several scarves, it looks like. If you can see the walls of your closet, again. If the color doesn't clash with things or distract you with all the smiling while you choose your clothes, I say it's not worth the effort still, but I didn't demand everyone to agree with me or their situations to be similar to mine. I don't see the point in jewel-boxing the closets until there's nothing else left to accomplish, but I can see how if everything else was beautiful outside the closet, the unfinished details would nag at a person also. I guess I'm not there yet. :)

I would be concerned with being able to see the color of my clothes. Doesn't the pink skew the darker colors?

Man, people can get so cranky here. I think it's a cute idea but not necessary, of course. It might be a good way to use up some leftover paint (for those times when you're itching for some kind of home improvement project to do). This is no sillier than being a bit picky about the shelf liner paper you use in the pantry. No one will see it, but it does make a difference. Small details are what make a place unique and home.

I see two totally different colors in that closet -- a pink/coral above the shelf and lilac below. Is that just the lighting/my computer/my eyes?

i think this looks really great, i love the color.

i skim coated and painted the insides of my closets in colors that i am not brave enough to commit to painting a whole room.
even though its a small change, it really does make the whole apartment feel better. for me anyway, i feel like i am less likely to fill my closets with junk if they look good.
