ColorTherapy: Why Dont You?

Why dont you install a hand-painted ceramic sink in your bathroom like they do in Puerto Vallarta? Colorful tile is everywhere in Mexico--stair risers, insets, backsplashes. I love these sinks, and furthermore, my favorite place to use bright colors like this is in kitchens and bathrooms, because theyre small ugly spaces that you spend lots of time in and which are always in need of some perking up...

I wish I had a New York resource; if anyone knows where to find these, let us know.

Why dont you paint your folding side table sea-foam green to match your McCoy Kiln pottery collection? Says Mr. City: I like my surroundings to be cool, calm and placid, and I choose colors that reflect that. I prefer cold to hot. The pottery reminds me of things I had in the house as a young child. Except for the homoerotic art, my grandmother would be very happy here. Benjamin Moore Spruce Green, 2035-50.

Why dont you paint your nursery goldenrod with orange trim? Now thats a great use of yellow if you ask me. The number one reason I write this column is so nobody has to use pale pancake-batter yellow anymore unless they absolutely believe its the perfect thing, and thats what most people would put in a nursery. I like how this color ties together the dark wood and the outsider art. Even the clutter looks good.

Why dont you paint the back wall of your closet teal, but leave the shelves white? Im not always a fan of this lookto my eye the result is too many busy boxes. But what I like here is that the tchotchkes feel special, and the dust bunnies fall back into the distance. That said, this may be a candidate for the tidiest closet in the history of the universe. Benjamin Moore Blue Lake, 2053-40.

And this just in: Why dont you paint your prep room lime green? I cant tell if this is a hoax or not. It looks a bit like a psych warda POV shot, natchbut I get so few submissions that Id like everyone eager to have their 15 minutes of fame. So just for fun lets play a decorating game: what would you do to get this room up on its feet? I say, lets add some rust-colored Palm Beach chairs with white piping, some wicker shelves and better lighting. What say ye?

Email pictures, a brief description and the paint name if you have it to colortherapy@earthlink.net, and put WHY DONT YOU in the subject line.

I know where you can get hand-painted ceramic sinks! Mosaic House on 22nd and 6th. I used to work there and never tired of looking (and wanting) the blue and white painted sinks. They can pretty much put any type of Moorish/Islamic/Moroccan/Spanish type design you want on it...if you don't mind waiting (it's all done in Morocco).

www.mosaichse.com (the site is outdated)

and no, i don't work there anymore.

Or you could go to Puerto Vallarta and buy a sink and fly back to Philadelphia with it on your lap, like my friend did. Mosaic House is probably the cheaper way to go, but going to PV sounds like more fun!

Search for Talavera sinks on ebay. There are tons of beautiful options.

When I go to visit my mom in Tucson these are everywhere - they sell 'em by the side of the road! - and they are very affordable. But I have no idea how practical they are - they seem like they wouldn't last long. I'd really like to know if anyone else has experience with them

the sinks I meant - wouldn't they get all chipped and stuff?

They will wear over time: that's the charm.

They're all over Phoenix too. The tiles as well. They're actually pretty reasonable. I always thought it would be lovely to do a powder room with one of those sinks. Some of the rustic style homes out here have spectacular bathrooms done with those sinks and tile.

You can also by blank sinks from pottery supply catalogs and glaze your own, my mom and I each painted sinks when I was about twelve, and they turned out amazingly. They were in her house until she moved a year ago and now I think they are in storage somewhere. The only catch is you have to find a kiln to fire it in.

Mags- I didn't see your post before I posted a minute ago. Our sinks were in our house being use by two irreverant children for about twelve years and we had no problems with chipping or anything like that.

Psych ward? Way to mince words there, and thanks ever so. It's simply a crappy photo, but the best I could do. It's an intense, cheerful green that glows in natural light. Sherwin Williams color--Lime Rickey.

My mother in law has a similar sink and tiles in her bathroom. It makes it a very cheery space. The only problem was that there was a weird spot in the sink with a sharp piece of glaze sticking up. They finally sanded it down thankfully.
