A Beautiful Room Smackdown (or Who Gets to Choose the Rubber Sheets?)

2004_12_7_smack.jpgFinal Day. This contest set out to provide us all with a glimpse into other's peoples homes and their ideas. In that respect, we think it has been successful. As for the competitive aspect of the whole thing, that has been difficult...

That said, we love a good smackdown and we DO have prizes to award, so here goes. Our panel of highly trained interior designers has chosen 5 finalists:

Look closey at these five and then vote for the one which you feel is most beautiful (and that can be broadly interpreted). The Polls are open from now until 9am tomorrow (Wednesday) morning. We will award a first, second and third place and figure out the HOT prizes accordingly... If you have a moment, explain yourself below. Thanks to all! MGR

It's the most realistic ...

Maxwell, any chance you could most Aulaire's bed photo? She said she sent it in and it doesn't seem fair to vote without that focal point of the boudoir.

My vote goes to Chad's DIY. It is closest to what I'd want in a bedroom. With MK's Retreat coming in second. Although all the finalists have things to recommend them or details to quibble about Chad's has the clean lines I favor with a lot of warmth brought in by the wood bed and color choices. I'd still like to see Aulaire's bed photo too, but I don't think it would sway my vote.

Aulaire's is where I'd feel happiest, so that got my vote.

I went with Chad because in the end it seemed the most thoughtful and "decorated" while still seeming friendly and comfortable. I don't think you can ask more of a bedroom.

Hard to decide. Chad's is the most beautiful, glossy magazine type, and Shannon's is the most beautiful, out-of-the-box, lots of personality type. Plus Aulaire's just seems so darn inviting. Hmm, most beautiful, I'd be most comfortable in...I think I'd have to go with Shannon's!

My favorite--next to my own, of course--is LM's #4. I like spaces that manage to be invigorating and restful at the same time, and LM's room feels that way to me.

Chad has used textures and colors to create a cozy but lux bedroom retreat. I like MK's bedroom, but I feel it lacks a certain touch of adventure/imagination. It does have a peaceful feeling, though. I love Aulaire's space. It has a wonderful romantic boho feel. However, without a photo of the bed I didn't feel like I could call this the best bedroom.

Isn't that the bed on the floor next to the fireplace, under the big standing lamp? That was my interpretation... perhaps wrongly!

I think they're all beautiful in their own ways, but when push comes to shove, I just can't resist the simplicity of sun streaming through unadorned windows and hitting a wood floor. It's how I'd love to wake up every morning. So I picked #10.

Um, how do you know that's the only room with unadorned windows and streaming sunlight? And I think the realtor should get the credit for something like that, not necessarily the room's designer!

Um, you think I could afford a realtor on a poet laureate's salary? After deciding we wanted to live in Flatbush, E and I walked around the neighborhood until we saw a For Rent sign in the window of a 99 cent store. The place was filthy and bug-infested when we moved in. There was no streaming sunlight--the pocket doors were painted over on one side and drywalled on the other. Having been forbidden by the landlord to remove the drywall, we snuck it out in little pieces and spent about twenty hours stripping paint. We earned that light.

I can't enter because I no longer live in NYC. But here's a link to my bedroom here in Sydney. Rock on!

Wow DeeDee! You are not shy about putting those bright colors together! Excellent...

Shannon--
Not intended as criticism of you... just trying to imply that perhaps the other contestants might also have similar access to streaming light... and perhaps worked just as hard as you to earn it. And that perhaps the contest was about more than that. Just my interpretation, I suppose. Didn't mean to offend.

Oh, no offense taken. I love that we're talking about "access to streaming light."

But now, about this poet laureate's SALARY-- does Chad have reason for an appeal?

Is it too late to withdraw!

I give the designer full points for not screwing up the room's inherent lines, as so many more arrogant folks are wont to do for the sake of imposing themselves on their architecture. Less is more, and doing little can still be considered an aesthetic decision.
