apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

August is Summer Hideaway Month!

2005_8_15_roof.jpgSometimes the heat just gets to you. With the overwhelming response from readers that NO, they didn't leave the city this past weekend and NO, those that did are more than sheepish about sharing pictures of their getaway, we are altering our contest slightly.

What's the coolest spot in your apartment?
Where do you go to relax?
What are your interior secrets for beating the heat?

Instead of just pics of out-of-town summer hidaways, we are also soliciting pics of Ultimate Summer Hideaways inside the city.

Since NYC is one big livingroom anyway, they could be pics inside of your apartment or outside.

We are open for submissions through next Monday, and HEY, do you really want Twirly and J-Lupa to win???? MGR

during heatwaves i like to make lots of ice. i freeze ice in plastic trays and store the cubes in a large white ceramic bowl in the freezer. any drinks i have, mostly lemonade or ice tea are served in glasses stacked to the brim with cubes.the process of making ice, i love the look of that heaping bowl of ice and the cold drinks are a mini escape from the heat. tv and air conditioning are a great combo.in past summers i rented films like the day the earth caught fire, and summertime.

Our place is a duplex and the bedroom is on the lower level. The walls are 18 inches thick. The thermostat is on the upper level, so downstairs is always cooler than the rest of the apartment. It may be 90 degrees outside, but we sleep under a down comforter. I love central A/C!

Ditto on the lots of ice-ness. To combat the night heat I make a bunch of hot tea, pour it in a glass stuffed full of ice up to half full, then decant lemonade on top. To sweeten it I add a homemade mixture of mint oil and organic sweetener. I also eat a lot of frozen fruit bars.

No AC unit because my window unit sucked and I had to get rid of it (will never buy Daewoo ever ever again, am checking out the AC thread), so I am using two fans and a large coldpack around my neck. This past Saturday was hellish, so I added three cold showers to the mix.

I really want to leave the city the last week of August...

Is "organic sweetener" sugar?
