apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Kitchen #13: MR's Escape From NYC

Name: MR
Location: San Francisco, USA

Favorite Kitchen Stores

  • Sur La Table great selection, good for books too
  • Local flea market for linens and bowls

Pitch:
I love my kitchen because it has a separate little room for the sink, so you don't have to look at dirty dishes while eating. Sunlight comes in through a window looking out to our backyard. Also, this old huge stove works great, and is good looking too.

After living in tiny apartments in New York for 10 years, finally I have room for a real kitchen table. If I owned this house, the first thing I would do would be to install hardwood floors, then I would paint the walls green.

3 Compelling kitchen cooking/design tips:

  • Fresh flowers and plants make me happy, and I always light candles at dinner

  • If you don't have room for a dishwasher- consider getting a small one that sits on the counter. Ours is called "Equator" (I think it's greek) and it works well.

  • Try keeping the whole kitchen as free of clutter as possible, no magnets on the fridge or bouquets of dried herbs hanging off door knobs. Get rid of everything you don't use, gifts included!.

Okay, I think I've figured it out--I respond to this kitchen the same way I did to Faith's. It makes me feel relaxed. I love it.

I love that your beautiful old stove works... I don't quite understand why your sink is in another room, but if it works for you...

It really is beautiful but I don't think I could cook very effectively there since I'm a multi-tasker and find the sink too far from the stove.

I actually like that the sink is in another room, but that's probably because I have a small kitchen right now. My husband and I cannot comfortably both fit in there (unless we both stay in exactly the same place and there is no passing). He always comes in when I am cooking, and wants to get to the sink, which is in the far end. Then we do sitcom-worthy maneuvers to pass each other. That's probably why a separate sink room appeals to me. Plus, the whole kitchen is very cute and sweet.

Maybe as a result of living in places with small kitchens all my life...I think that kitchen is way to spread out!

How annoying to have to walk all over just to fill a pot and put it on the stove.

Not to mention needing a tool that is over the stove when you are in the "sink room."

My entire kitchen is probably about the size of that stove...there is nothing that I can't reach just standing in the same spot cooking! (Well, except for a few things that are up higher..)

Since I have an eat-in kitchen myself, my first impression on seeing this one was to love the sink being sectioned off. No matter how I arrange things, it's pretty hard not to have some dirty pans on the counter when I'm eating, and it would be nice to have all that elsewhere. That being said, I think I would find it a little awkward to have the sink so far away from the stove.

But I love this kitchen - the light, the green outside, and the wood details make it really appealing to me. The stove is marvelous.

When I first moved in to this apartment i was not so happy with the "sink room", and it took a while to get used to, but now I love it. It's actually not that many steps from the stove, and the little table next to it works like extra counterspace when I'm cooking. The only tools I keep over the stove are my wooden spoons, everything else is in the little room on exposed shelves that go all the way up to the ceiling. Thanks for the comments!

I heard a Broadway actress talking about her picks and preferences for Best Actress at the Oscars. Of Virginia Madsen's performance in Sideways, she said, "She was LOVELY. And lovely ain't easy."

You kitchen is LOVELY.

I love your kitchen - instant response to it - not "fancy" nor high tech - looks as if one could walk in and feel comfortable immediately.

My favorite so far.

Your kitchen truly is lovely. Whether it's easy or not only you can say, but you appear to pull it off with grace.

Which is more than I can say for some.
