Messiest Closet? Carolyn's Mess

Name: Carolyn
Hood: Midtown
Dimensions: 4'x3'

Message in a bottle:

Hi- My name is Carolyn and my closet is a mess. It's the ONLY closet in my midtown studio apartment. I keep clothes, shoes, handbags, luggage and my dog carrier- which I put stuff in for storage when it's not in use.

Also my skis and ski-boots are hidden in there as well.

I know it looks like I have a lot of stuff, but I do regularly cull- I just took 2 big shopping bags to Goodwill- so I am trying to get with the progam. I think my closet is a pretty good size- with the right tools I feel it could store my things in a more organized fashion- I have jerry-rigged some extra shelves, and I have a small bookcase in the back serving as a shoerack.

I would like to be able to stop keeping so many of mine and my guests overcoats on the outside of the door.

She desperately needs a make over or we might loose her in there some day. We don't want that!

Honestly, you just need to keep at it. It looks like your shoes and accesories are a bigger problem than your clothes themselves. Those shoeboxes are not working -- every time you go to get stuff in one, they all fall over, right? I would ditch the bookcase, buy yourself a real shoe organiser and then try and dump anything that doesn't fit, other than those ski boots. Otherwise, you might look into getting nice-looking storage for them. I bought an Ikea bench that hides my tennis shoes near the door. I keep my fancy shoes in the back, but all my everyday shoes are right where I take them off.

I also saw this artist's bedroom where he'd put up individual hangers along the wall of his room and he hung up a different outfit for each day. It made kind of a nice pattern. Maybe you could do the same for your coats -- you could make them a feature in your entry-way rather than an embarassment hanging on your closet... or not... If this is your only closet and you don't want to live this way, I have seen those big canvas-covered closets that people in the suburbs use for their off-season clothes. You could buy one as your "hall closet" and free up that door.

Yeah you need a bigger closet! Good luck with this contest!
