Messiest Closet? Ross & Amanda's Digs

messy - amanda (2).jpg

Name: Ross & Amanda
Hood: East Village
Dimensions: Complicated. Under staircase. 18" deep by 7-10' wide.

The Backstory:

The impossible dimensions of our closet and my failed attempts to organize it have left us with a closet that is complete chaos!

Let me try to recount the many ways in which our closet is absurdly dysfunctional.

I bought huge plastic drawers to stack up in the closet, but they're too deep, so they're turned sideways. That means that we have to take everything out of the closet to open the drawers. (By the way, the drawers are really disorganized because it's so hard to open them). I've included a picture of the drawers (note that they're sideways) with a ton of stuff jammed on top of them.

The rod is too close to the back wall, so our coats are mashed against the back wall of the closet.

The triangle of space between the closet doors and the bottom of the stairs is PACKED FULL OF STUFF. Tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, climbing gear, Christmas presents bought in August, shoes, books, paint rollers, etc. I couldn't take a picture of it all without pulling it all out.

I think this one should win, just to see what the closet organizer people do with this weirdass space.

A closet under the stairs? Oh, the horror. Lord help us.

I was going to vote for the ladies with the cooking, cleaning, possibly rat-infested closet, but now I think they are just messy. I definitely think this odd shaped space would be hardest for the closet guru to organize.

Brick it up.

That can't be organized, short of structural work, and only provides cruel hope.

Oh come on, Fred, don't you want the fun of watching the closet organizing people's heads explode?

My heart goes out to those who must live with this closet. I can only think of the ideal way to live with closet limitations. That is to purge and own only those things that will fit in your storage space. I myself am still working on it.

It was the valiant attempt to organize this space that really brings home the pathos of this closet. I think this is the clear leader so far.

It's got my vote. I have one of these under-the-stairs closets and find it impossible not to waste space due to the weird configuration. I'd be very interested to see how this closet is resolved.

i had ths same dilemma once. i tore off the plaster and replaced it with simple hinged woods panels that provided access to all of the space.

This closet is the sort of awkard space best left to professionals. Almost everyone else can figure it out on their own, but this one is special in a horrible way.

They have a staircase for gods sake, how big is their apartment! No! No vote from me.

after sharing an office with this gal, i can honestly say, it's not her...it's the closets fault. let's see what the closet guru can do.

OK, so I've looked at all these closets by now, and I've gotta say...

...most of the entries here don't need a closet reorganization, they need a MAID. These people with messy closets (rats, pots & pans, whatever) just submit their clutter and expect to win? This closet here is truly a DESIGN CHALLENGE. And that seems like the point of the contest to me...

Those closets look like a back-alley in Cairo, and by "back-alley in Cairo" I mean the messiest closets this side of Egypt. I think I even saw some Fraggles in there.

so sad that they have to live this way. Bad enough there is no space in NY but to have no space in one's own home....no American should live like this!

I think the 3rd picture is the hilarious one. Better be careful what you put in the bottom box...

... probably have to consider whatever is in there is pretty much staying in there.
