Mario Lopez is a contractor in NYC that will take on small jobs.
Say you have one room in which you want to remove old cabinetry, redo the floors and paint. Although a big job for you, this is a small one for a contractor and most will not touch it (or return your calls). We hear Mario Lopez will and will do a good job to boot.
As of this writing, he is about to do some work for a client of ours and we will get back with a review, but we recommend trying him if you need help.

Is he licensed?
Mario recently completed some small jobs in my condo to get it ready for sale (replacing some sheet rock that was damaged, sealing a leaking window, repainting etc...). Just wanted to let people know that he did a great job - he was very detail oriented and stayed until the job was done right. Thanks to him I feel comfortable that my upcoming open house will be a success.
I was really disappointed--I met with Mario, he gave me a good price and seemed very detail oriented. I gave him the coop board application (which requested license and proof of insurance) and called him every other week to check in with him about it. After six weeks he said he finally had the application ready and would bring it by the next day. He was a no show. I called him and emailed him for a few days after that and haven't heard anything back. I have no idea why, but I guess I'm glad he went AWOL before I paid him anything rather than after. He seemed like he would do good work. I have no idea what happened (and haven't heard back from him since).
I hired Mario to build a wall for my baby's room after reading this post. He built a wall separating the living room from the former dining alcove and put in two doors, glass windows and also built a changing table, hung a chandelier and two window shades and a flat screen tv. He did a fantastic job at a more than afordable price with a great attitude and conversation along the way. I highly recommend him for any project.
We had a bad experience with Mario. Initially, he came over, was quite pleasant and gave us a quote to do some renovation to our home office. We scheduled the work, and the night before, I left a message on his answering machine to fax his proof of insurance to the management company of our condo building. Then, guess what? HE NEVER SHOWED UP, did not call, and although his wife was apologetic on the phone when we tried contacting him, we never heard from him again. Now we are scrambling to find a new contractor. I am guessing that Mario is not insured and possibly not licensed...

I have just recently underwent a major co-op renovation and finished three weeks ago. I did a new kitchen, new bathroom, and re-designed interior, with new flooring and more. I used Progressive General Contracting & Construction. You will have to speak with Al or Bob. They understand construction, and what it entails, and I felt that they really knew what they were talking about. They had a quick turnaround time on co-op applications, and they have plenty of references of work they have done throughout the city. Their crew was professional, on time, and on budget. Mario le felicito por su trabajo realizado en nuestro apartamento. Pienso que no solo es usted un buen profesional en la construccion si no tambien una persona creativa con mucha visión artística.
Estamos disfrutando del apartamento, es muy confortable y las reformas y cambios que nos hizo estamos muy satisfechos.
Si alguien desea hacer una rehabilitación o transformacion de un espacio, se lo recomiendo .
Nos alegramos mucho de haber contactado con usted, y quiero dejar constancia en este apartado .

Mario will act like your best friend and you will think he has it all figured out but DO NOT FALL FOR IT. If you are lucky he will finish the job, and if you are unlucky he will run off with your money and leave you with an abandoned shell and never return your calls. His dishonesty and unreliability are off the charts. And his skills might seem great until the next crew comes in to fix everything he did wrong and you get to pay for it. The favorable post in Spanish from "Starwaslin" on 10/17/08 was probably solicited by Mario since he abandoned my job less than 2 weeks before that. You have been warned.
