apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Rachel Ray At Home on Ice at Bryant Park

01.31.rachel_ray.jpg

The ice skating rink at Bryant Park was recently transformed into the set for Rachel Ray's show. There were a few transformations that made the rink into a home-of-ice...

Seating was created using huge frozen blocks and a working kitchen was set up on the rink, complete with a gas cooktop set into an ice kitchen island. Catch Rachel Ray On Ice on tv today.

ugh, Rachel Ray. there's nothing i like about that woman. just read this about her, specifically her show:

"a show that has come to represent blind consumerism, brash and abrasive cheer and the privileging of ease of quality in matters both culinary and philosophical."

Yes! Thank you, that was spot on - particularly the "brash and abrasive cheer" part.

I find some of Ms. Ray's recipes useful (usually with adjustments made to things like quantities of ingredients and cooking times), but she has definitely become a caricature of herself.

People up home say she's always been like that.

She's a working-class, brash, climbing upstater.

And I should know!

What in the world does this have to do with Apartment Therapy? So they made some chairs out of ice? It reads like a commercial.

Ouch. Such hate for RR. I'm not in her fan club or anything, and I've tried some of her recipes and they worked out fine. Sure she's loud and you see her EVERYWHERE but I wouldn't say that makes her vile. Ease over quality? Depends on what you're after. If I'm on the prowl for an easy home cooked meal for my family, she has value. If I'm cooking to impress a group for dinner then maybe her recipes work, maybe not. She's not a classically trained gourmet chef and I don't think she's pretending to be either.

I, too, cannot abide that woman. I was having a conversation with a couple of women who work at Oxygen in the same building as Food Network and they say RR has a terrible reputation and drinks like a sailor. I was shocked to see that she was on Iron Chef. What can that woman do besides open prepackaged food?!

brash is the perfect adjective. bleeehhh.

and that's great that she has good recipes, i mean i'm sure she sits down and comes up with them all herself and all...

she reminds me of people who yell at their kids in public.
