Dept. of Mini. We asked you all what the best, most useful, smallest things in your apartments were and got some great replies that were also surprisingly practical.
The first one is the Norpro Egg Rite Egg Timer recommended by Shannon:
The first thing that popped into my head was also a kitchen gadget. I have a little fake egg to drop in a pot of water. It lets me know when all the real eggs are done cooking. Now I can make deviled eggs without worrying if I'm gonna slice open a slimy, runny yolk.
(Thanks, Shannon!) MGR

No offense, but I don't see why this is at all necessary. Boiling eggs is one of the easiest things you can do in the kitchen. You just time them.
I just had to reply.
Exactly, you just time them, and this is an egg timer.
But while hard boiled eggs is easy, getting the right timing on soft boiled is tricky. It helps not to be simply watching the second hand on your watch....
i have one of those egg timers, and i think it's really cute and have taken it from apt to apt... BUT the one thing that drives me crazy is that when the water is boiling, it's impossible to see the timer. am i not supposed to keep boiling the water once the eggs are in? (see x, people do need help with boiling eggs)
But a regular timer is multifunctional. This is one of those one use gadgets, so I just don't get the idea that it's so useful. As I said, no offense. I don't mean to be snarky, but I find this to be cluttery since it serves no other purpose.
Here's how you make hard-boiled eggs, ellenjean. Put in enough cold water to cover the eggs. Bring to a boil. Take off the stove. Cover, let pot sit 12 minutes.
For soft-boiled eggs, just do the same thing for 3 minutes. No second hand required!
I have one of these and I love it! I use it all the time. I know... people say 'what's so hard about hitting a timer?' dude, I forget how many minutes it is and if I do several eggs, then what?
Norpro, that's what. If we love it and find it to be a genius idea I don't see why folks are bothered by it.
it's elegantly functional, but also... it's really cute!
