Hmmm. Over the weekend we were given one of these small things and asked to guess what it was for. Made of orange plastic, with a ring-like circle on one side and a smooth curved surface on the other that is interrupted by a shark-like fin....we didn't get it. Can you?

i realise that this isn't Treehugger, but is it necessary to celebrate this little plastic doohickey? it does the same task as a fingernail or a kitchen knife, at much greater cost. i love little tools as much as the next guy, but c'mon, this thing is pretty useless, and environmentally harmfull.
Yeah, let's stop with all this environmentally harmful crap that you're touting. What's with all the posts on paint, furniture, appliances, renovations (do you know how wasteful renovation is - why can't ppl learn to like what is already there?)? This site is pretty useless, (sic) and environmentally harmfull (sic).
BTW, how do you sic superfluous commas?
I don't think this is useless at all. My mother has arthritic hands and if this saves her struggling to peel an orange, then I'm happy. A knife and/or fingernails aren't an easy option for her.
And I really I don't fear landfill overload from this.
I thought it was just an ugly napkin ring (speaking of the superfluous).
Yeah, shaddup site haters! You obviously haven't checked out this site enough if you are misunderstanding it as not environmentally conscious. It is so! Phooey on yooey!
Heheh. Flattery will get you everywhere my friend.
Point is why make a post about profligate waste on something so small that could actually help (as has been pointed out) someone with a disablility? Surely there are far more egregious examples of wanton waste to spend your time writing about?
"I don't think this is useless at all. My mother has arthritic hands and if this saves her struggling to peel an orange, then I'm happy. A knife and/or fingernails aren't an easy option for her."
this is a much better critism of my initial post, thank you. I hadn't thought about the arthritis factor.
as for the waste i refered to, i was speaking more about the energy and materials used in manufacturing than the potential of these things all over landfills.
To me the irony is that next week we'll all be encouraged to "toss those single-use, or unknown use" gadgets that clutter our kitchens and consequently our lives.
Personally, I hate peeling oranges. I mean I really hate it. All the oils that come out of the peels are really hard to wash off, and I hate getting it all under my fingernails. I have used gadgets like this before and I love them!
mom should have pointed you to the tupperware orange peelers. They work better, despite having a higher breakage probability. If you don't want to go to a party to get one, they are forever being ebayed.
I like peeling oranges. I like triple cappucinos with cinnamon and a flamed squeezed of orange zest on top, and I like it when I'm riding the train and someone else starts peeling an orange (as long as they don't throw the peels on the floor). It refreshes the whole car. My gf gave me one of those tiny orange trees for Christmas and though the oranges are terribly sour, the peels smell great. I wonder if one can candy whole tiny oranges.
