Another dreamy retreat from The New York Times International Real Estate pages — this time it's a 4 bedroom and 3 bathroom escape on the Caribbean island of Barbados. The 3,500-square-foot multilevel home was built in 1975 by Ian Morrison, a local architect, who took inspiration for the design from Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings.”

The majority of the rooms are open to the outdoors and the whitewashed interior walls help to move the eye towards the ocean views. The elegantly furnished property in the former British colony is listed at $2.5 million but the article states that "buyers can estimate cutting 15 to 30 percent off asking prices".

I'm not seeing the inspirational connection from lotr at all - not for the habitat as a whole. Lovely space. Lovely book. The two hardly connect here.

It's a beautiful place but vacation homes always make me a little sad because you know they just sit there empty for 51 weeks a year. Maybe it's all the white and the giant table that looks as though no one has ever touched it but this one looks especially lonely.

I see the connection with the movie. It's like a little hobbit house, all the wood and greenery, the low sloped ceilings. Maybe all the white is inspired by the elvin homes.

It's kind of like Hobbits meet Elves, here - it combines some of the curvy tunnel-like hobbit traits with the up-in-the-trees Elven feel.
