This weekend home sits on the dunes in Amagansett, New York. The original home's facade allowed a glut of sunshine in that kept the house hot (Image 5). The renovation by Sag Harbor-based Bates Masi Architects addressed this in addition to size and spacial flow issues in their design.
The original house had a chopped up appearance — by filling in the gaps, Bates Masi Architects was able to add space and modern amenities to the existing home on a restricted lot.
To help ease the heat of the sun — without completing erasing the view — the architects designed a screen of bentwood planks and steel that would also function as a the home's new facade.

I love what they did with the exterior. All the white inside creeps me out. I adore the new sun screen.

I love the photo of the old house. What a shame.

What a monstrosity of an exterior.

I love the work of this architect's firm, but they ruined this house! Much better before.

Agree - before was MUCH better. It had character and charm.

unlike the other commenters, i think the remodel is a VAST improvement over the original house. the original was a hot mess. the new is ordered and calm. the interiors are quite white, but like most architects, i'm sure the photos were dressed to show off features of the building they wanted, not the owner's clutter. the architecture shows through better when it isn't full of stuff.

I strongly disagree with some of these criticisms. The old house was that sort of cookie cutter modern design that has no internal order. The new design has drama and makes the space usable and beautiful. I also like the use of the materials in that sunscreen and the contrast between the dark exterior and white interior. I think it's time that our ideas of modernism get modernized.
