How about an escape to a 103-year-old mansion set on a rock in Narragansett Bay off the coast of Rhode Island? Boston architect Henry Wood shares his weekend bohemian retreat — Clingstone — with The New York Times. Maintained by guests who pitch in with cleaning, painting and various projects, Clingstone is a celebration of salvaged materials, hard work and community spirit...

I live in Newport, RI and see that house almost every day! I had an amazing opportunity to walk through it last summer. Quite possibly the most unique and intriguing house I have ever seen. It can be rented for weeks - months at a time. A wonderfully peaceful retreat less than a mile from the crazy summer tourist season.

I've admired this place and pissed off my onboard guests by idling too close/too long one late summer afternoon during Newport Jazz Festival. great feature in NY Times today.

I'm friends with the owner of this place and have been there for several of the work weekends. It's quite amazing.
