New Yorkers have been escaping the city for as long as the city's been here. See escape at its extreme at Kykuit, the Rockefeller residence located in Sleepy Hollow.

The estate was home to four generations of Rockefellers and is today open to the public for little one day escapes. Take a quick trip up there and check out the landmark house and gardens and an art collection that includes work by Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore, Alexander Calder, Louise Nevelson, David Smith and more.

There are choices of tours that focus on different aspects of the estate. One focuses on the grounds, another the art, another the residence. There is also a general overall tour that shows you a bit of it all. Has anyone been?
I have been to Kykuit and it is really amazing. Once you are there , make sure to take the guided tour and stroll around the garden, it is a perfect place to take photos.
Enjoy!

also, just next door is Blue Hill at Stone Barns, which is an excellent restaurant. most of the food is farmed on the grounds. the building is quite literally a stone barn, which is gorgeous, and the interior is minimalist and beautifully done. definitely worth a visit.

I got to stay there overnight once for a work retreat (organizations can apply to have events there; they only accept events that are for a certain kind of philanthropic purpose) and it was AMAZING. It was really like being in a fairy tale. The rooms were in the Stone Barn, which is a barn in that they used to keep horses (and cars) in the first level, but is also a gorgeous house. The whole property is quite huge, with multiple buildings, formal gardens, lovely wooded areas to walk in . . . I could see being a gajillionaire if it meant you could live there. :)

Eat the rich.

Do not eat the rich. They are stringy and tough, from working out too much.

No doubt Kykuit is lavish, extraordinary---but remember the Rockefeller family's commitment to education, civil rights, art, conservation.

I was there in June - the gardens were breathtaking. Also, the building exterior & outbuildings have lots of details that I photographed for design inspiration. Another recommendation for anyone interested in home tours of the rich & famous is Duke Farms (Doris Duke Estate) in Hillsborough NJ -- it is worth the trek.

The tour is great. I remember having a wonderful guide, an older lady who lived the "Sabrina" life (almost). Her father was a driver and they lived above the garage. She played with the Rockefeller children and remembers Mr. Rockefeller too.

Given the Rockefeller's wealth, I am almost pleased by the restraint of this house.
I mean, have you ever looked at the Vanderbilt estates? Sheesh...

I just visited the Rockefeller estate...and my god it is beautiful! absolutely beautiful. My neice is a driver for the rockefellers and knows the family personally, she use to tend after their son Samson. They are American Royalty.
