NYT: Dutch Barn Rural Getaway

The Sanders Family weekend home in Roxbury, New York looks like the perfect setting for a J.Crew photo shoot. The 8,000 square foot Dutch-Style barn from 1897 was reconfigured as a living space by Derek Sanders, an architect. Where Others Saw a Big Old Barn, They Saw a Home and the massive rooms and extensive vertical space (there are 35-foot ceilings in some areas of the house) take full advantage of the light and space. Furnishings are kept to a minimum and despite the incredible size, the home is cozy...

We love the black exterior (and it looks great in the snow!) and white trim work. This is an amazing example of how important natural light can be to a space. The floor appears to be true linoleum (not vinyl) which is a great idea for economical, environmental and sanity reasons. Who wants to worry about carpet in the country?

yes, real linoleum is a great, green (really green, not this faux-eco-chic crap) product. and LOVE the black exterior. I kinda want to move in.

I love the giant dog bed in their living space. The color is great, but I'm a traditional red-barn person. Also love the wide-board flooring in the entry. I wonder if it's original.
