Renters' Solution: Ceiling Fan in a Light Socket

021909_tf_urbanfan1.jpgCeiling fans—as ugly as the world of HGTV and TLC design shows would have you believe they are—are necessary here in the south. With sweltering summer temperatures, running the air conditioning on full blast around the clock would result in a utility bill charge with more digits than we'd like to see....

Thank you for recognizing the necessity of ceiling fans!! I'd love to see a feature on better looking ones. I live in the southwest and they are much needed here. And just as ugly as can be.

they are ugly if you get the standard crap from Home Depot or Lowes, but there are some nice ones out there. And they increase energy efficiency. Those crappy chandeliers HGTV and TLC shows don't do that.

Is the Urban Fan available, or is it a concept?

Ugly? I adore ceiling fans, but then I've spent a lot of years in the tropics.

It was difficult to find good fans for our home that had good design and good construction, but we had success at:

Modern Fan Company www.modernfan.com (Modern design; good construction.)

Dan's Fan City http://www.dansfancity.com/ (Something for everyone --from tacky, to traditional, to modern--wisper quiet motors, lots of finishes, great all copper wire construction, and rarities like real wood blades. The two we have from there move air better than any other fan I've ever had.)

No matter where I've lived, at some point, I've had to sacrifice to function and design around something. My current climate may require ceiling fans, but it doesn't require radiator heat. C'est le guerre.

Interesting idea.

I'm a "fan" of ceiling fans that blend into the ceiling. I prefer a swiss coffee color (the same as my ceilings), no vents on the underside of the motor housing, and no lights. It shouldn't be the first thing someone notices about your room.
