Oh Lloyd! Lampshade Pendant by Hemal Patel
Design Showcase 2009

Materials: Polypropylene, H35.W20.D20cm
Price Point: $125

"Oh Lloyd! is a simple, elegant lampshade pendant. Designed to install quickly and easily over any standard light bulb fitting Oh Lloyd! radiates a soft warm glow when the light is switched on. It's geometric form is both beautiful and unusual in that it's shape seems to morph as you walk around it - from one angle it takes the form of a teardrop..."

"...walk around it by 45 degrees and you will see a smooth, organic, seed-like shape, and then at another 45 degrees you will see an upside down teardrop. This unique characteristic keeps the design fresh and new.

Hung individually or in clusters Oh Lloyd! makes for an interesting focal point and one that changes from the viewer’s perspective."

This is inventive, plays with a well-known form in a new way, fits easily over a lightbulb, and seems like it would work well in a grouping. I like this; it's one of my favorite entries. I've seen other "slip over bare bulb" shades before but never one as elegant as this.

That said, I could see $125 for a set of 3. But, as I and others have pointed out before, it seems that this stated price is for the product being made in extremely limited quantities, not being mass-produced. I gave it 3 stars, because I don't want to punish a good design for not being mass-produced [yet].

It's a little pricey, but not insanely so. I would save up my pennies to get something like this. It's one of the nicest solutions to bare bulbs I've ever seen.

I gave the design a 2 but should have given it a 3. I gave it a 2 because of the price point which I felt was a bit OTT. Three for $125 would be a wonderful price point.

so refined & elegant- the best designs function as beautifully and simply as their form- as this does well!

This seems like the best design yet. Well executed and thought out - a brilliant solution. 3 stars.

I think the only thing missing from the photos of this product is a shot of them lit up. It's a nice solution for dressing up a hanging bare bulb. Also, I'm a little curious about the scale. How big are these?

I gave it a 2 as well entirely due to price...
...now if it were handblown glass, it would be stunning and well worth over $300!

nice...where's the seam line? The real version of this would have a seam on one of the middle lines. I'd like to see how it turns out.

How much light will this actually produce?

Doesn't anyone build anything for $25 these days? WTH is with all the $100 items that should retail for much, much less?

I gave it 3 stars for design.

I don't think the price point on this is too high at all. I think it is right on the money for comparative products. Great design too.

Beautiful shape and simple design. The ultimate question: Will it accommodate CFL bulbs?

I love how in the sketch it looks like the shade is swallowing the lightbulb. Very cute.

I love the design. Wonderful look. Hate that it's plastic. Add heat from a bulb and you have a nice little toxic brew filling your home.

This is my favourite to date. Beautiful design and I think the price is fair. I wish this had been in production when I needed to find a shade for my landing light.

Best of luck from a fellow Londoner!

doesn't seem like it would let off much light....

I like it, but I'd love to see a photo of it or a grouping of them all lit up.

poloypropylene, this is a great use for the material, in the sense that it creates living hinges. Bravo.

hmmm looks cool, but how much light is it really gonna put off? I'm not confident that this thing could illuminate a cardboard box. And I also feel that the heat from the bulb could cause some problems, especially when it's on for long periods of time

i thought this had to make it to the prototype stage? those look like renderings...

and how can you pitch a lamp without showing what it looks like lit??? if it's so marvelous where is it with the light turned on?

This is unreal! As in it is only a rendering, come back when you are a little further along. Good start!

definitely a rendering.

Rendering or not, it's still a lovely design.

I'd like to see it on a larger scale, so you could really get a sense of the flow, curves, and swoops.

2*.
