The perfect party store, and one that will get you in the mood to purchase a show off item for your home, Mxyplyzyk specializes in defying categorization and always having something brand new that you have never seen.
They stock lighting, clocks, bathroom hardware, luggage, dinnerware, toys, barware, phones, mats and much more at every price point you can imagine (though most prices are smaller than a breadbox).
Their website is annoying (and doesn't show much). And like many New York stores, they want you to visit instead of shopping online (which is a silly business plan, but the visit is good). Our favorite items are the Tibor Kalman M & Co. clocks (@ $125), the Jacob Jensen phone ($95), and all their lighting (shown: artichoke lamp $85). MGR

I LOVE Mxyplyzyk, but have always found the store staff to be somewhat all caught up in some painful drama the shoppers haven't been tipped off too. For all their fun and funky merchandise, would it be too much for ANY of them to crack the slightest hint of a smile every once in awhile?!
(oh, and I'm guessing their reluctance to build an online presenece has something to do with how impossible their name is as a URL...)
I agree with Patrick. Mxyplyzyk's merchandise never ever disappoints but during my last visit, I was horrified to witness one of the managers (owner?) reprove a fellow shopper for bringing in her stroller when the shop was clearly too crowded and small to accommodate her and her child! I left without buying anything that day....
Plus the fact that they are ripping off a DC comics character by the same name. He was known for chaos and mischief and while I've never been to the store, it sounds like they could use a little of that stuff to cheer up.
i too love myxyplyzk and concur with most of what has already been said. i actually find most of the staff helpful and i have seen then crack a smile or two but i have now been witness to two different instances when the manager/owner (tall dude that hovers) has gotten cranky with customers who were merely asking questions about the merchandise. i know a few folks boycotting the store because of his rude demeanor and i admit i've held back a bit as well. nevertheless, their selection is lovely and while you can find the same trash can for a fraction of the cost at bed and bath, you can't beat the curated selection with at least a smattering of reasonably priced treasures.
Mxy is a great store! The folks who work there have ALWAYS been nice to me! I always know that when I need a gift, they're gonna have something amazing and perfect. One of the best stores in New York!
I like the store, but agree that the staff isn't very helpful, and in fact, usually acts like you are slightly inconveniencing them by being in the store.
Great merch. but, really guys,...they can't help it...they work retail.
the owner is a d*ck doesn't know the first thing about making customers happy. someone should tell him that a day will come when people don't want to spend $55 on a bathmat... so he might want to work on his loyalty and people skills.
if he happens to be reading this, you lost two customers for life this weekend... not to mention our countless friends and family who will follow our lead. good going, tubbo.
I'm not certain where these negative comments stem from. Mxyplyzyk is a wonderful store and the staff have ALWAYS been great to me. I have always received a very warm welcome and many smiles - and fantastic free gift wrapping for my gifts!! That's the problem with these on-line comment boards - any person that may hold some kind of personal grudge - real or imagined - may post words. Mxyplyzyk is my favorite store in New York City.
P.S. Be sure and check out Mxyplyzyk's new web site! Awesome!!
Can't agree on the web site. Cool items, sure, but it is poorly set-up and hard to navigate.
The site is wonderfully designed - there is just no pleasing some people in this world. This "Patrick" sure dislikes Mxyplyzyk - I think that this is clear. We do all wonder who this "Patrick" really is!(?) Good Day to all and Happy Holidays!
I went this weekend for the first time to see the sale. The quality of everything in this store was really really bad. Most of the smaller items were from the Acoutrements Catalog (or something similar) and the rest was just junk. The photos on the site make the items look MUCH nicer than they do in person. During my 10 minute visit, no one said hi or asked if I needed help. Whats with this place?
Hi "Matt". Gee, the sale held every year is very popular with most folks. Funny how this store stays put year after year after year. I shop the sale each year - I think the past 12 or 13 - I've lost count - and I have also never have gotten a personal greeting from the staff - they are always SO busy with the store being SO packed helping customers. Best to you, "Matt".
I love Mxyplyzyk. Great items, and the staff is very very nice - very helpful all the time. One of my favorite stores here in NYC.
Last weekend I was I was setting up a trade show booth
at the javitz. Our display broke in shipping, I headed down to mxyplyzyk and found some things to display our product on. Our display looked great except for the fact that our customers were busy asking about the mxyplyzyk product and not ours.

In reference to Dee's comment, I am delighted that someone would scold rude people (like those that bring huge strollers into tiny places). That's just obnoxious!
I wish I had seen these comments before I ordered from them online. I bought a large bag, which arrived smashed down in a flat box and salad servers, which are defective. They are also only printed on one side, which was not mentioned in the description. They are also printed wrong, with some of the white showing on the front. I have contacted them and received no reply. They were supposed to be Christmas gifts. I'm very disappointed and wouldn't order from them again. Customer service is not a priority at Mxyplyzyk.
