apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Contactbox by Anna Falkenmark

A new market has opened up for charging stations as people find they have more personal electronics than they care to look at. The latest we've spotted is Contactbox. It was created by Swede Anna Falkenmark...

...who developed the box when she'd had it up to here with the wires in her own home. The box is made of lacquered stainless steel and has a perforated oak top. Very nice materials for a very finished look. The interior has space for plugging in six devices. Available for purchase through the Scandinavian Design Center in your choice of white or black.

I could use something like that since I got so many chargers for all my portable gadgets.

Nice idea, but I don't seen any kind of mechanism in the lid or box to prevent the cords from dropping back down inside when an item is unplugged. That means you'd have to open up the box, fish out the right plug, and feed it through the top holes every time you need to charge something. Annoying! I'm sure something could be rigged up post-purchase, but for $85 (pre-VAT!), I'd want that kind of important detail to already be in place.

you're supposed to UNPLUG chargers from outlet or power strip when you're not using them

I love this box. The last time I checked with the folks at the Scandanavian Design Center they informed me that the box only comes with a powerstrip for European outlets. Do you know if they are now offereing it wit a US powerstrip?

This thing is prime to be DIY'd. And you could get one of those smart powerstrip with the change you save.

Julianna is right, and this needs a master switch (yes, there's one on the power strip, but it's not very accessible).

Those transformers are active even when nothing's plugged into them, and when you're not charging your phone they are still drawing current, converting it to nothing but heat. Very wasteful. Unplug 'em or turn off the power strip.

Anybody who's DIYing this: I'd recommend making it out of all-wood, having a bunch of lose wires lying around in a steel box is asking for trouble.
