Socket Pocket Charging Station

09.17.socket_pocket.jpg

On the floor. That's where a lot of people end up putting their iPods or cell phones when the're charging at an outlet. Or even if you use a landing strip, bedside table, or desk, they still take up space and their cords can get in the way. We like the Socket Pocket because it provides a pocket for devices right next to an outlet.

It mounts by plugging into any standard electrical outlet. The drawback: it requires that you have two side-by-side outlets: one for charging and one for holding the pocket. Two for $12 at Solutions.

It doesn't look to me like you need two side-by-side outlets. You just replace the existing outlet cover with the Socket Pocket, which consists of an outlet cover and the pocket hinged to it.

This is a great idea but $12 seems a bit steep... it wouldn't be too hard to DIY something like this.

And is the pocket lined? Because ipods scratch like nobody's business.

$12 is for two of them. But, alas, you'll have to provide your own lining at that price.

I think it's slap-yourself-on-the-forehead brilliant.

betsbillabong--

When you diy this, keep track of your materials, transit cost to get 'em, electricity while you work, and time it takes to make it.

If you beat $6 a piece, let us know.

My only question is why did they design the plug to stick so far out from the wall? Why couldn't they turn it 90 degrees and position the plug so that it is flush against the wall? Wouldn't that make so much more sense?

You could probably achieve something like this with half of one of those padded envelopes and some double-stick tape. wrap the envelope in pretty paper if you want something especially nice.

Of course, one of those envelopes, in the right size for an iPod, is $3-5, and a roll of double-stick tape is about the same. A single sheet of origami paper at Kinokuniya Books in midtown is $1-2. So, no, I don't know that it would be too much cheaper, unless you had a lot of the materials already. If you already had the right tape and a used envelope lying around, it could be as cheap as $2.

also, Archie, that looks like the original iPod wall-wart charger. Not a whole lot you can do about that bit except hope someone invents a more spatially efficient format for AC adapters...

Okay.. I'm trying to see how this works.
Does the pocket slip over or attach to the outlet cover plate? Or is it an outlet cover plate... but extended?
that would be the way to go.

here's another option from chiasso. a bit more expensive as $24 but no need for side by side outlets and a clean way to store the cord.

hmm, maybe i'm not understanding this. it looks to me like there's no charger/electricity involved... that it's just a pocket that you can stick next to the outlet. i agree this is nice-looking (and also: i thought it was $12 each, not $12 for 2, which makes a difference). but i still think you could rig up some kind of pretty gift envelope and tack it to the wall next to the outlet...

$6 each is definitely more reasonable, though.

but doesn't it still leave a boatload of wires on the floor? seems to only address part of the problem.

From the description, it looks like it's $12 each OR 2 for $10.95 each. And you don't need two outlets next to each other; the pocket is attached to a cover plate.

I agree with joeq; the wires would still be all over the floor. How about a little hook underneath?

2 packs of 2 for 10.95 each. It doesn't include the plug, I think.. because it's advertised to hold cellphones too, which would use a different input. It's just a plastic cup with a hole for the plug to go through.

I don't see why it needs to have outlet prongs on it though.. it could just use those foamy poster wall sticky things. Or a suction cup, for less permanence.

Oh and it does come with 2 twist ties for your cables!

i actually bought the ikea bathroom cabinet thing:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10083655

atran in stainless steel - attached it to the wall by the my door and snaked in chargers through the back via a hole.

now i just throw all my stuff in there, plug in my phone & ipod and close it.

when i leave, i open it, grab what i need and i'm good.
