I was thrilled to have stumbled upon Japanese housewares store Unico while in Tokyo. This Japanese chain of stores focuses on a relaxed and rustic interpretation of Scandinavian modern (a Japanese obsession, it would seem) that combines their own original furniture designs with excellently curated accessories from suppliers all over the world. I was especially fond of their casegoods and their devotion to solid wood furniture (very little plastic here!)...
• 1 The TUO dining table in the foreground...
• 2 All the furniture was small scaled and perfect for a Tokyo apartment.
• 3 The bedding patterns were especially "fresh" and appealing — like this ACCHA Madras-like linen plaid!
• 4 I REALLY wanted a PlusMinusZero kitchen appliance like this coffee/tea maker, but they were too expensive! (more on plusminuszero in a later post!)
• 5 More of the fantastic casegoods...
• 6 More beds, bedding, lighting and lots of bedroom accessories.
• 7 These adjustable stools are available in multiple woods and the knubbly fabric upholstery options were all nice.
• 8 The linen and melamine trays (which are surprisingly microwave safe) will be available from Design Within Reach in August!
• 9 ALBERO modular sofa system — very Scandinavian!
• 10 The weather was nice and a lot of furniture was pulled out onto the covered sidewalk outside of the store.
In addition to the casegoods, Unico has a lot of options for modular kitchen storage — perfect for the Tokyo studio that doesn't come with a kitchen. With the addition of a hotplate, these would transform a small space. And like everything else, the small scale is something you don't see in a lot of American furniture.
These pictures are from the Daikanyama store, but there are a dozen other Unico stores in Japan. They also sell their furnishings wholesale to other multi-line furniture stores.
Unico is a must-see for any Apartment Therapy readers visiting Japan!

I love the space conciousness evident in the first picture, where a small table is elegantly made, but made to fit in small places. And in the 6th picture, with a bed next to a small sofa seems almost to define a complete living space.
When do they open in on 4th Street in Berkeley?
