Blogging Cottage Living... Snowball Window Boxes

11.29.cottage_living2.jpgDecember's issue of Cottage Living shows a how-to for a cute wintertime window box.

We generally have ferns in our boxes, but the onset of winter leaves us grasping for something else. The how-to, which requires only very simple craft supplies, can be found here...

We don't love that this calls for the use of styrofoam balls. Maybe there are other solutions - like paper mache? Or the reuse of styrofoam balls if, for some reason, you have any that would otherwise be thrown away.

The outcome is playful and warm. We like the soft glow of the lights coming from within the box.

How about real snow. No, sike. What about citrus fruits - they wouldn't be white (unless you wanted to paint them and forgo eating them later) but you could wrap white ribbon around them so they looked like Christmas tree ornaments. Those enormous green grapefruit guys that show up this time of year would work, as would regular grapefruits, oranges and limes and lemons.

The house on the cover is huge, hardly deserving the name cottage.

I don't think there's going to be much snow this year, haven't you heard?

cakekick, it's 'psych'.

I think part of the appeal is that the balls are all white. You could get any kind of balls and cover them with cotton batting to get a similar effect. As long as it doesn't rain - rain-soaked cottong batting would probably look like crap.
