Holiday Margarita Recipe

2004_11_30_clioglass.jpgPunch! Chris asked if we had any punch suggestions, and we were already planning on featuring this beautiful glassware from Juliska that we have found at Clio. So, in time for the holidays, we're plugging strong drink and fragile glasses.

Margaritas That Will Make Men & Women Giggle

  • 1 cup fresh squeezed lime juice (roll the limes first)
  • 1 cup Triple Sec
  • 2 cups silver tequila (not too picky: Sauza, Cuervo...)
  • 4-6 cups ice

2004_11_30_lime.JPGAdd everything together and mix thoroughly with ice (throw in a few of the pressed limes for color). Let sit 5 minutes. Serve.

This will make enough for 8 people and more will be necessary. Also, in case anyone asks what relationship margaritas have with the winter holidays... it's the good cheer. MGR

Thanks for the suggestion. I just might have to test these margaritas out tonight and see what we think. Beautiful glasses too!

If they're really good friends, swap out the Triple Sec for Grand Marnier. Dee-licious.

As a bartender I felt a bit obligated to mention that this recipie is A LOT stronger than anything you'd get at a bar or restaurant, so be wary. And not everone likes Grand Marnier as it tends to be heavy and weigh down a light margarita; Triple Sec is, indeed, the safer choice. And (if desired) don't forget to salt the rims (run a lime around the edge of the glass first, and then spin in a plate with a couple millimeters of salt)!

As a big fan of margaritas, I've tried a lot of recipes. And as much as he annoys me, I found Emeril's "Fresh and Fierce Margaritas" to be the best I've ever had. By a lot. It's extra work, but really worth it.

    "3/4 cup fresh lime juice
    1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
    1/4 cup water
    1/4 cup pineapple juice
    1/4 cup sugar
    1 tablespoon lime zest
    1 tablespoon lemon zest
    8 lime wedges
    1/2 cup coarse salt
    1 cup ice
1 cup premium 100 percent agave tequila
3/4 cup orange-flavored liqueur (recommended Grand Marnier or triple sec)

In a medium saucepan, combine the lime juice, lemon juice, water, pineapple juice, sugar, lime zest and lemon zest. Bring to a boil over medium heat, and cook, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. Remove from the heat. Cool to room temperature and strain out the zests. (Can be made in advance and keep in a covered container in the refrigerator.)

Chill the margarita glasses in the freezer for 30 minutes. Place the coarse
salt in a shall dish or saucer. Wet the rim of each with a lime wedge and
dip the glass into the salt to coat.

In a cocktail shaker, combine the cooled citrus syrup with the ice, tequila
and orange-flavored liqueur. Shake until frothy and well chilled, at least 1 minute. Strain into the prepared glasses and garnish each with a lime wedge."

And, I believe it was Cook's Illustrated, said that the best tequila for margaritas is Sauza tequila, reposado (the one with the green label).

Grand marnier is tons better, not heavy. I second that

While I have had better ( though, more labor intensive) margs, this is the best one I've found that's easy and effective.

    In blender combine:

    - 1 can frozen limeade
    - 1 canful cheap tequila (use the limeade can)
    - 1 canful triple sec
    - ice

    blend, salt, drink, repeat...

To make a killer marg, use key limes instead of regular ones. Yum!

make sure when you salt the rim that you dont just dunk the rim into the salt as when you bring the glass back there is salt on the inside of the rim and it falls into the glass, giving your margarita a salty taste. Instead rim the glass with salt by tipping the glass on its side, spinning it in your hand. I like to half salt the rim, giving people a choice.
