Miina Äkkijyrkkä's Kevätjuhla for Marimekko

0604_marimekko.jpg

Maybe it's our recent trip to the midwest, but Miina Äkkijyrkkä's Spring 2008 Marimekko fabric pattern, Kevätjuhla, fills us with energy and a breath of fresh air...

The young little calves running around look just like springtime to us. We wonder where we'll see this cotton fabric pop up - pillows? Skirts? We'd love to see it. The pattern comes in four colorways. From Marimekko's description, Kevätjuhla...

0604_marimekko2.jpgpays homage to spring and freedom, and to those who dare jump into anything new and exciting. The joy of calves rushing through spring fields is embodied in the fresh background colours of the design; a glowing orange, a bright green and a turquoise. In addition, the Kevätjuhla print appears on white batiste, which is perfect for light and fluttering summer curtains.

Another of Miina Äkkijyrkkä’s fabrics, Unelmia (right), is a charming art print, which is both gentle and rough, like the intensity of a life inspired by dreams.

Oh yes, I love this fabric. It's sold at http://store.txtlart.com/ I've wanted it ever since I saw it, but it's pretty expensive (and big).

Miina Äkkijyrkkä is a funny woman: she's an artist who lives in the middle of nowhere on a farm that has a very rare old Finnish cattle breed. Her art is all about cows, she's famous for making these huge steel cows out of old cars...

You can also try Finnstyle.com or the Marimekko website. There are some Marimekko stores around the states that sell yards of their print fabrics (there is one in Miami Beach and NYC, not sure about others). The Finns rock! Terve!
