NY Good Questions: Where Can I Find White Felt to Reupholster My Couch?

6.9couch.jpgDear AT,

I would like to reupholster my sofa and chair in white and the two fabrics that come to my mind would be either wool or felt (but I am open to suggestions... the only no-no's being leather and microfiber)...

So far no luck... I searched fabric stores online, eBay, Knoll and Maharam.... nothing.

Tord Boontje's Prince by Kvadrat is the closest I got (black pattern on a wonderful white wool, but it is too beautiful to just use it on the back and I am not sure if the black pattern will not show anyway).

I love felt and thought white would be relatively easy to find, but I exhausted all my searches and I know there are options out there - I just need help finding them.

Thanks! Lorena

wool and felt are both obnoxious to maintain (and virtually impossible if you have pets!). However, I wonder if you've tried Holly Hunt?

Holland and Sherry will probably have some good wool options, and if you're willing to consider linen, try Rogers & Goffigon also, they have a nice selection in white and off white. I don't have specific wools or felts to recommend, but if you call a rep at any of those places, they should be able to direct you toward fabrics that might suit your criteria.

Felt is inapproprate for upholstery since it's not a woven fabric - even if it were backed, it would rapidly thin and pill in the seating areas and arms.

I'd suggest meeting with a professional upholsterer and see what they can recommend since they will have thousands of fabric options.

i don't think felt would be a good choice, but here is a resource.

this is a good resource for fabric online, at least for clothing.

@ bepsf--i think that's really not quite true. kvadrat, for instance, does make some felted wools specifically for seating applications (for instance the Divina line, which has a pretty good martindale rating). Incidentally, quality felted wool fabrics are either knitted or woven prior to felting. Craft felt, in which the fibers are just felted directly, is a totally different animal.

But I don't think the Divina comes in white :(

Gretchen Bellinger carries a felt that comes in close more than 20 colors. She has several whites, taupes, and creams to choose from. I can't quote you the exact price, but I think it goes for something like $50-60/yd. It's an excellent product! I worked for her at one point, and I have seen it used for many applications, with beautiful results. It is upholstery weight, non-scratchy, and meant for furniture application.

Oops, it's called Limousine Cloth, and you can find it here: www.gretchenbellinger.com

You may have to speak with a local rep to get your hands on it, but they will have color swatches, so you can take home a sample.

Well, I'm not sure felt would be my first choice, but http://www.aetnafelt.com has 100% wool felt at $31.65 a linear yard. It can be found in their craft felt section.
