#36 - Jenn & Chris’ Small Loft

Name: Jenn & Chris
Location: Chelsea, MA
Type: 680 Sq. Ft Loft, own

Why I use color:

Our small loft is painted a soothing, light blue/green color to create a relaxed environment. Being a small, open space, we chose to paint the far bedroom wall a complimentary deep burgundy color as a way to define space.

2 Good color tips:

1. Complimentary colors work. Don’t be afraid to use two opposing color palettes. Work within the same hues and each color will enhance the look of the other.

2. Use color to define space. Even if you don’t paint an entire room, One wall of color can set the mood and drastically change the tone of your environment.

2 good color resources:

1. Being recently married; wedding magazines and web sites. They always showcase beautiful color palettes along with impact accent colors.

2. Artwork. An eye catching piece of art can often be the inspiration for your own home’s canvas.

Uh... where's the part where we vote?

I had to laugh (not at your colors) -- your "small loft" is a three-bedroom apartment in New York City.

posted by polina on 2006-10-20 12:45:33

Is this contest about the whole apartment, or can it be just about one nice corner? I only ask because both of these photos are basically of the same spot.

From the view out of your bedroom door it looks like quite a drop-off; I don't see any kind of stairway to a lower level. You are braver than I am to live without any kind of railing; the word "lawsuit" came to mind immediately.

It would have been nice to see some of the blue and green instead of two pictures of the same corner of the room.

I'd love to see a floorplan for this space, it looks really cool.

i love the way the bedroom looks raised, and in addition to the color- I'm very interested in your triple sliding doors- any info on those would be great!

your walls are fantastic, can you tell me what type and color paint you used? A great choice of color too, it is both cozy and striking at the same time

who makes the light?
color is lovely.

the colors are lovely...
but I'd really like to compliment you on the shot with the dog...very artsy + cool.

This space has a really nice feel. I'm curious where you got your bed as I'm looking for something like that. Yours looks much nicer than the Gothic Furniture wood frames they sell in NYC. Please do tell!

where is that lamp from? love love

posted by Tartraz on 2006-10-20 13:35:50

Hey is that a whippet? They are the ultimate bedroom accessory!

I second the requests for more pics of the place.

saw a similar lamp at A&G Merch on North 6th in Williamsburg. Same owners as Future Perfect I believe, but much more affordable.

Your place looks awesome, but I don't think your photos show much of a color story. Might some of the 'insta-finalist' voters explain?

All the comments so far say nice dog, nice lamp, great bed...I don't see anything compelling about two colored walls that makes this terrifically strong entry (although it is good looking, and I am a sucker for pups!)

posted by JenDC on 2006-10-20 13:58:06

I love what I see, but I wish I could see more.

I love the way you defined the space. I love, love, love the oversized vase and the screen.

Very cool space, I really like dark colors in bedrooms. Where in Chelsea? I too am in a loft nearby...

posted by Joey on 2006-10-20 14:03:35

I love this! Photography is great too; cute pup.

Does anyone know where I can get that lamp?!!

posted by Linda on 2006-10-20 14:22:40

Where is the color? Where? I don't get it. It's a nice space, but this really has nothing but one dark wall, neutral or white everything else.

Hi all - thanks for the comments.

I'll answer what I can:

The bedroom is raised, and we have 2 6ft. deep drawers below for storage. The stairs are on a landing to the left, just out of view.

The three translucent panels slide to partition the bedroom space for a bit of privacy.

Patrick is indeed a Whippet, and the light is Adesso Jumbo Architect. We purchased it online here: http://www.autumngalleryforthehome.com

The bed I've had for literally 20 years - unfortunately I have no recollection of where it came from. I'll look when I get home tonight and see if there's a manufacturer's name on it.

We're on Spencer St. in Chelsea, and I'd be glad to post more pictures if were a finalist :)

Happy voting,
Chris

Really nice space, which I think encourages people to insta-finalize, but the color is really nothing extraordinary or compelling. Doesn't fit well in this particular contest.

posted by k on 2006-10-20 14:44:47

It's really hard to see the color, it looks like brown and white, but looking hard, I like the color combination. It's different, but chic and still comfortable.

posted by Amanda on 2006-10-20 14:55:29

aside from that deep plum, i'm in love with the dog (ok, maybe all dogs...)
such a cutie! and i see you have a blanket for him to lay on your bed, we do the same thing. it's easier to clean than the comforter.

posted by angelune on 2006-10-20 15:07:53

My 2 cents:

The translucent panels are made of frosted plexiglass and the colors are a subtle blue/green color and a deep burgundy.

This is the first time we've submitted photos of our place for a contest and I have to say it's been fun, even if some people don't care for our color choices! Very cool to see other people's creativity....

posted by Jenn on 2006-10-20 15:08:58

seriously, the colors are nice, but 680 sqaure feet in CHELSEA is not "small." let's not play coy.

posted by JR on 2006-10-20 15:10:46

It's not brown and white... it's deep eggplant contrasted with a pale Pacific blue-green, with white/cream accessories.

Anyway, I like it. It works.

posted by arza on 2006-10-20 15:12:21

Hey JR - 680 in Chelsea, MASSACHUSETTS is small. Are you from the area?

I voted insta-finalist because the colors of the space make me feel two different ways even though it's showing the same exact space -- instantly relaxed and warm (the first photo, looks to be night time) and also instantly invigorated and calm (the second photo, looks to be day time). I agree with the many people who asked for more pictures. Patrick the Whippet is priceless, so I wish the first picture showed a different area of the home. Wood tones are also colors and can be very hard to work with. I really appreciate how the homeowners merged the necessary items: floor, bed, sliding doors, storage underneath, the ceiling beams and the trim above the window with the colors for walls, curtains, bedding, planter, artwork and Whippet. Although these colors seem "safe" to me (I personally like black and white and bold blasts of color/graphic prints, and obsess over Wearstler designs), I really love the space and feel if it were decorated with any other colors it may look cheap. The colors they chose coordinate so well with the unmovable items and even make the exposed ductwork seem to blend seamlessly with sophistication. This is not how I would decorate my home but I would love to live here because it is so well done. I hope that explains the insta-finalist vote. There are many entries that apply to "it's just two shades of paint, not good use of color," but this is not one of them. Kudos for proper color usage and understanding your space so well. I'm jealous.

I love what you did with the space. I'd love a video tour of the loft. The burgundy is striking and sets off the photographs beautifully. The relaxing light greenish color makes me want to take a snooze with the whippet but he looks a bit to comfortable.

FANtastic.
thank you for pairing my favorite sartorial colors in 6th grade, circa early 80s.... in a room. i'm inspired and heading to the paint store.

ummmm....gorgeous, but use of color? i see one pretty wall, some white bedding, and a cute dog.

posted by kyd on 2006-10-20 18:09:08

I like the deep burgundy with the pale blue/green... those really work nicely and I wouldn't have put them together. (I've seen lots of chocolate with aqua and burgundy with sage but it's interesting what a fresh combination can do.

posted by valerie on 2006-10-20 18:20:56

i think it's a very sophisticated and well-done apartment, but this is a contest about COLOR. yes, you have colors, but their not the prime thing that sets this apartment apart.

posted by bob loblaw on 2006-10-20 18:39:12

Wow! That color look very different in the different lights. Thanks for including both pictures. The room itself looks to be very well designed and comfortable and your plant is gorgeous. Nice work!

posted by jennifer on 2006-10-20 21:54:09

I really love the way you have contrasted the light bed coverings against the dark walls, but this is a contest about using color and you only used one. Nice style.

I'm desperately looking for glass sliding doors (milky glass preferably) to serve as a room divider. Yours look amazing. Could you tell us where you got them?

posted by Joan on 2006-10-22 09:55:20

the color, one of my favorites, isn't really being "used" here, for example, as brooke does in her outstanding entry featuring a color in the same family.
here it is used for a cheap high contrast riff with nothing else of interest. except that stick leaning up in the corner, which adds to the impression of hipster fecklessness.

posted by purejuice on 2006-10-22 10:16:24

Hi Joan,

We couldn't find sliding doors that worked for our space, so we ended up making our own panels. We purchased the frosted plexi from a plastics co. bought in 4'x8' that we had them cut to size. The frame is made of popular, painted black.

Purejuice,
I had to laugh at your comment about the "stick." That hipster stick is a giant pestel from W. Africa. We're actually trying to find a use for it (we won't be pounding any yams around here any time soon!), so if anyone has any ideas, we'd love to hear them!

posted by Jenn on 2006-10-22 11:04:49

Fantastic! I love the colors and the space you have created. It's pure home (as snoozing hound demonstrates!) - all 680 square feet. I can almost smell the Thanksgiving turkey in the oven...nice job.

Yay Boston! It looks like a beautiful loft. I love the dark color in the bedroom - perfect for a good night's sleep.

For all the positive votes here, I can't find anyone articulating why it is a great color story. Odd when there are so MANY votes.

Good thing prizes won't be awarded on vote count alone.

posted by JenDC on 2006-10-25 14:17:30

um, that was some constructive criticism JenDC, particularly seeing you didn't articulate WHY you don't care for it.

I love the color combo, particularly the dark burgundy/brown - it makes the space warm and inviting. Nice job.

posted by Sara on 2006-10-25 16:51:26

Sara, I posted color comments earlier. It is great that you love the colors, particularly when you can't even tell which colors they, um, actually are.

posted by JenDC on 2006-10-25 17:52:57

JenDC - I voted Insta Finalist because I think this is a great, totally smart color combo. Very serene but bold and modern at the same time. And a refreshing, much needed diversion from the over kill of lime green in this contest. Personally, I have no objection to lime green. But it's been DONE to DEATH! It's great to see someone attempt something new and pull it off so well. I also think the colors of this room perfectly fit the style of furnishings and accessories and exposed ceilings. FYI - The color you are smacking Sara on was described as "Deep Burgandy," which can very often look like a reddish brown.

Jenn and Chris - FABULOUS!!

Great job Jenn and Chris!!
