apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#39 - Sandra's Soul Colors

Name: Sandra
Location: Boston, MA
Type: Two-bedroom apartment

Why I use color:

I live in a rented apartment, it is a fixed structure, the only way to change the character of the place is using a color motive given by accessories such as curtains, rugs, and bedspread. Color is also a way to decorate a place within a budget.

The colors reflect the mood it inspires; for my daughter’s room I picked her favorites, the one she chose for her jackets, pants and dresses, purple and light green, those colors reflected her playful, bright, fun spirit. For my bedroom I chose a simple decoration, trying to recreate the simplicity of Japanese rooms and their plasticity, just removing a bed you can transform the room into another. I chose to give color with red details because it conveys the color of the passion that you can expect to have in a bedroom.

2 Good color tips:

1. Use the colors of your soul.

2. Use your soul color as a leitmotif

I like the reasons behind the colors, though the colors themselves are not my taste.

I am ashamed to be from Boston right now. This makes us look like a style-less city.

I feel bad, but it's not my way of going about decorating.

There are so many reasons to be ashamed of being from Boston -- but this is not one of them. This is a great kid's room. It may not be one of the high-designey spaces we're accustomed to seeing on this site, but it serves its function with verve and style.

Still sore about the Yankees being spanked this season?

Or maybe you're just still mad we beat you the last time you were in the running?

(Sorry- nothing to do with colour, design or your post Sandra- I just had to say something to 12th street douchebag)

I actually like the color of your daughter's bedroom and I love what you've done to yours. I'm glad you chose the colors your daughter likes instead of you choosing for her. Love these rooms! Good luck!

this home has a lot of potential. I think she did enter a child's room and an adult room... unless that small bed is supposed to be a day bed?
this place should have been staged and photographed much better.

Bostons not wholly without design sense. Check out my room: #14 (shameless plug.. I know... sorry)

I think the first picture is way more successful than the second. The second looks a little hastily composed and shot. I'd take some time, nudge the crooked picture... maybe get a brighter rug.. and throw some colors on the walls. All I'm really seeing is white walls and reddish sheets & curtains.

Re: Yankees -- yes. And hey, can't we have a spirited intercity rivalry without resorting to such rough language? And on a thread about a child's room, no less? You ought to be ashamed of yourself. And of Boston, of course.

Back to the original coloar entry

The lavender in the kids room is nice, but the matching bedding makes the room look too purply. Light colored bedding with maybe a lavendar or pinkish accent (bedding or pillow) would really tie it together.

I really like this kid's room :) It's nice to not see a kid's room in primary colors with Tickle Me Elmos all over the place. This looks like a space that can mature well with time. It looks like a cool kid's room now but it can easily turn into a cool teenager's room.

This room is sweet and unsophisticated, and works well as such.

I would've been psyched to have such a fun, purple room when I was little!

Oh, so it's a kid's room. I'll scratch my comment. However, you may want to try making the bed. Looks rather unkempt, even for a 7-year old.

Oh this would have been my DREAM room as a kid! And as for mom's room, I like that you used soft colors.

It's nice that you are willing to do your daughters room as she wants it : )

I like the first room better than the first. I don't see any of the green that's in there though. I'm normally not a fan of so much matchy color in one room, but since it's a kid's room, that's ok. It's a very sweet little girl's room, girly, but not over the top (and clean, there's nothing on the floor!). I really like the little table w/ the tv, it's a pretty feminine touch that she can use as she gets older.

I think my favorite part of the second room are the yellow frames. The comforter looks kind of like a sleeping bag, is that right? I see where you're trying to go w/ the Japanese style, I just think it needs a little work. I'd try checking out some magazines or websites w/ the style. I think if you added some modern looking plants or stones, it would add a lot to the space. Also some kind of wall hanging or Japanese painting.

The color choice is appropriate for each room it also reflects good taste.

I think that u definettely have an style in decorating.
I think that both rooms have a connection in colors, simplistic , and a style of decoration Laid-back . I can see both rooms in the same house. I definatelly like . It shows a truly person , it is like nothing is fixed to be perfect in order to take the picture . Both rooms have a natural order.

budget or no budget, i do not see any of the above-mentioned creative decoration in these rooms. i see some cheap furniture and frequently used items and appliances with similar color themes but nothing outside of a childÂ’s room filled with items purchased on the whims of a child. this owner loves lilac bed covers a little too much and these rooms are not appropriate. sorry.

Gab the scab,

If you have the nerves to be mean, have the courage to SIGN your name!

There is knowledge in the color choice that is what the contest is about, not the money you expend in you furniture
