After all the Black, White and Red entries... kinda makes one long for a neutral color contest.
This is very nice, don't get me wrong. But all these beatiful places are starting to look remarkably similar, which makes them loose their appeal.

Add the nice furniture, the extant throw pillows, the slick tables and the silver candlesticks and disco balls. Then tell me how much it cost. Not that I dislike it, but I'd love to hear how they decorated AN EMPTY ROOM for $88. Not just made a nice room nicer.

yeah - i'd like some more details on those killer disco balls!!!

posted by Kathryn on 2006-10-23 13:54:26

why compare this person's entry to all the rest? That hardly seems fair - it's a beautiful room, regardless. Makes me wanna stop by for a martini! And I have to get my hands on that monkey poster!!

I feel like we've been given an identical entry for an "update your look for under $100" contest.

Not that the room isn't nice or anything, but what happened to following the format for THIS contest???

Not only do I love it, but there's a monkey graphic which I didn't see until after voting! Very nice, even for a Virginian ;-)

What is it about IKEA furniture that sticks out like a sore thumb these days? And not in a good way.

Not much going on here but painted walls, one of the more obvious ways to use color.

LOVE the disco balls!

This website needs to do a serious overhaul of the critical assholes that make all of these comments. It is such a downer to come on here and read such negative things about someone's personal place.Get a life people....or post your own homes so we can see how much "better" they are.

posted by Mary Anne on 2006-10-23 14:54:01

gina, the room is being compared beacuse it is in a CONTEST of other rooms.
As for the space, I'm underwhelmed.

posted by no on 2006-10-23 14:56:38

Downer to whom? I'm not seeing much vitriol in the comments here. I'm more annoyed by people volunteering to police the posts here than by the negative posts themselves. There's something foully self-aggrandizing about it. Get a life, yourself.

FUN!
And is that an orange bedroom I can see beyond the living room? Cool entry.

Sorry I concur with Mary Anne. The attitude of the postings has gotten too snarky and it's not as much fun anymore. "Police" the site? It's called moderating.

I agree - lately, i'ts not always a fun and safe design conversation here. These people are putting their taste on the line here - which takes a lot of courage - so I think we should respect that and carefully craft our comments. Lighten up people. Also, the Ikea bashing is redundant at this point. I think we all agree that Ikea has some really inspired pieces and then some not. A good eye can tell the difference. Taste is not about money spent. You can do really well with some of the Ikea components. Let it rest.

That said, this room looks great. Is the paint semi-gloss? I agree that I'd love to hear more about the other accessories - and also, I really feel that giving the paint color names should be required in this color contest! I love the orange.

You know, it's not the opinions that bother me so much as the name calling. Really, people weren't harsh enough on this post to be called "assholes." That's not very nice, MaryAnne. And why does everyone have to love every space? There are so many unexplained "No Way Jose" and it might be because they don't want to be deemed a-holes just for giving their opinion which you happen to disagree with. Last time I checked, we live in a democracy. It's soo boring and uneducational when everyone loves! loves! loves! an entry. I personally like this entry - but I want to know why others don't - it might help in future decorating decisions. Even if they don't slather their negative opinions in sunshine and daisies.

I absolutely love it!!!

so the 2nd pix is over exposed(?) or a tad harsh and probably not shot at the same time, BUT i voted insta Fin becauce the first shot provoked a tremendously positive reaction any one who can take stuff from the Swedish place and make it look swanky rules!!! The sparkles and the lighting lead yours eyes from the front through to the back - def top 3 for me.

As happens towards the end of any contest, there are some repetitions that occur - both in entries and in the comments posted about them.

But again, here we have some photos of a lovely room, but not exactly creative use of color. Painting the walls is about the least creative thing you can do. The furniture is sleek, the disco balls are fun, but the only non-standard color choice here is splitting the livingroom wall color from green to orange - which, in my opinon, does a disservice to the room. The orange has a wonderful warmth to it.

As for the snarky comments: on the one hand, no one likes a sanctimonious donkey spewing their opinions all over the place. On the other hand, this IS a worldwide contest about the use of color. I think its fair - especially given some of the entries we've seen, to point out who is and is not following the rules of the contest. And as a disclaimer - I HAVE posted my space on this contest.

Um, Dude, leave the moderating to the moderators. That's what they're here for. And as far as I can tell, there isn't one named "Mary Anne."

1) I really like this entry, but I wish you would've posted a picture of the bedroom (?) behind it as well, to show how you tied everything together.

2)Although I disagree with using the word asshole, alot of these comments are way more snarky than constuctively critical.Yes, this is a worldwide contest and criticism is expected, but there is no need to be harsh or rude.

I like this room and how the color is kind of split down one wall. The first picture looks especially good. I never thought disco balls could actually look modern. I'm not really a fan of the art on the floor and how it is behind the couch-it kinda looks like you just set it on the back of the couch. That kinda seems to be the new thing, but it always looks like you just never got around to hanging it up to me. The table in the middle of the room is nice, but the white doesn't seem to go w/ the room, not sure if you could paint it though. Overall, nice entry.

I love it esp the way the artist spent so little money for the change up. That's what I call a super designer, spending pennies for a terrific makeover you go artist. Thanks for such a lovely view.

p.s. keep up the good work

Great job with the wall color, especially the orange. Love the way you broke it up. Very interesting lighting. The piece de resistance is of course the disco balls. As such, definitely get that artwork up off the floor. What's most impressive about this space is that you've made it look good despite no apparent windows, molding, etc.

Love the wall colors and the way you intermingled the two colors of paint. This room immediately caught my attention. Great design and a lot of drama!

Wow .. THREE cans of paint were only $45.00? Um, ok.

Everyone should be using Safecoat paints with no VOCs anyway. Do some research .. the fumes ae slowly killing you .. Support GREEN!

Cool place though.

thanks for all of the comments. to answer a few questions i remember reading:

the paint is glidden's egg shell finish (normally $20 per can, but in this case, it was only $15 per can because i used the $5 mail-in rebate for each of the cans used).

thanks for all of the "sleek" and "nice" comments about the furniture. all of the furniture is from ikea's "as-is" section or from lay-z-boy (for instance, the white table was only $9) except for the one cb2 side table added in to dress everything up. all of the "art" is from target's clearance section or urban outfitter's clearance section.

thanks everybody!
