Name: David and Alli
Location: Downtown, NYC
Type: Rented 1-bedroom apt.
Why I use color:
It helps make our apartment a home. Living in an apartment with all white walls leaves you feeling transient, that at any point you could pull your pictures off the wall and it would look like any other apartment.

2 Good color tips:
1. Colors named after fruits and vegetables give you something else to talk about when people come over. They look and say "Oh, I like your green." To which we respond, "It's Dill Pickle." Deeeeelicious.
2. Oh, just paint it on. What's the worst that can happen? You paint over it? I mean, really.
2 good color resources:
1. Benjamin Moore's Mini Paint Samples. The easiest way to decide if a color will work in your room is to paint it, and if they're willing to make a sample of the color you like, it'll probably be ok. And they're only 3 bucks. A bargain!
2. Other people's badly painted apartments. You may not know what colors you do want, but it's very easy to discover what colors you don't.
I hate this green.
what a thoughtful and enlightening comment, ihatethisgreen.
i think it's cheery, and works fine with such neutral furniture. i like the warm bedroom, too.
I don't know enough about the use of colour by these photos--but the contestants way of manipulating positive and negative space is interesting.
Nice.
Oh, my eyes!
I think many AT readers are suffering from lime overload. I feel like if I see it one more time I am going to gouge my eyes out. Which should not reflect poorly on those who have painted their walls lime, it's just me.
Nice color in the bedroom. Peach Brandy?
Hate is such a strong word...
Peace be with you, Ihatethisgreen.
I happen to think the colors suit the space and if David and Alli love it, that's all that matters!
Looks greentastic fabulous! (:
LOVE the green!
You are inspiring me to paint my white rented walls.
Yes green has become popular. However this room looks wonderfully refreshing and livable. And I think the traditional furniture makes the room even cooler! Good job David and Alli! I also love your commentary.
I have the same dill pickle color in my bathroom and I absolutely love it. The bathroom is otherwise entirely white (shower curtain, tile, sink, towels, etc.) so the effect is crisp and bright and cheery.
To be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about the same color in a living room with all of the warmer-toned furniture and accessories. I feel that it needs to co-exist with cooler tones to really work.
The bedroom works for me because the warm tones in the paint are a beautiful backdrop. I'd much prefer this kind of color in the living room.
I like the two lights that are above the bed. Could you let us know where you got them?
Hooray for Dill Pickle! My living room is Dill Pickle. It photographs a little funny - mine always looks more electric in photos - but I think it still looks good. It's very clean and fresh-looking and many other colors look fresher against it.
I think the color name is misleading, though - maybe Benjamin Moore was thinking of the inside of a dill pickle.
I really like the green color, very pretty. The house looks very nice, I just don't see much use of color beyond the paint on the walls and a couple pillows. Those pink flowers do look really great against the green.
We're seeing so much lime green because AT's are a trendy and modern bunch - we're influenced by trendy and modern home catalogs, sophisticated design magazines, etc., and we're seeing this color in all those venues. Lime green is a beatiful color and, until now, an underused color in home decor. It's fresh, easy on the eyes, reflects nature, and sits somewhere there between warm and cool. Many of us spend loads of time in front of our computers perusing home decor websites like AT, while the vast majority of the population doesn't give it a second thought and is content to go along with the mainstream when it comes to color choices. In my area (New Hampshire), my lime green walls are an anomaly. There is a preponderance of what I call "Wal-Mart colors" - burgundy, navy blue and forest green around here. I can't stand going into a large chain store and being confronted by those same limited color choices every time! To my circle of acquaintances, none of whom are as interested in home decor as I am, painting my walls lime green was a shocking action and I love seeing people's reactions every time they enter my room. While we can all acknowledge that lime green seems to have become very popular, we must remember that it's popular among only a very tiny percentage of the population, almost all of whom seem to be regulars at Apartmenttherapy.com!
I LOVE THIS GREEN!
I'm a big fan. It just looks like someplace I want to live.
I've had lime green walls in all my homes since 1996 -I've moved several times and always chose variations of lime. To me, it is a very happy color and I think your wall looks great. I'm less fond of the peach pink, but I agree with everyone who says that your colors should make you happy. Color is so subjective that even a slight variation can bring joy to misery to the eye of the beholder. If it were my room I'd try adding some other colors to the peach pink bedroom to see what happens. Some olive greens would be my first try. Maybe a bedspread or duvet cover and pillows. The white and brown don't harmonize as nicely as some other colors might.
It's an okay green. A little too yellow for my tastes. I used something similar for a bathroom a long time ago.
I thought it was funny that while saying "Living in an apartment with all white walls leaves you feeling transient, that at any point you could pull your pictures off the wall and it would look like any other apartment" there is an empty frame over the couch.
david-
get back to work!!!
guess who??
Enough of this green already. What's up with that???
Eek, the severed hand on the nightstand creeps me out. I live an apartment with white walls, and they don't make me feel the least bit transient. I think the art in the lime green room is badly arranged. I'd try to do a little something to show off that nice table. Neither room looks finished to me.
I'm going to go out on a limb joiaberlin and guess that it was a joke.
But it does make you look smarter for walking right into it.
That being said, I happen to like the apartment. Well done.
Colors named after fruits and vegetables give you something else to talk about when people come over. They look and say "Oh, I like your green." To which we respond, "It's Dill Pickle." Deeeeelicious.
that's a good color tip?
honestly - you should meet more interesting people.
That green makes me very happy. The neutrals you chose look great with it.
Lovely green. I personally like empty frames when there is a cluster of them, as opposed to just one. But that is just me.
I think that it is so funny how so many ATers have such a strong dislike of bright green walls... To add to what powerjen said, I think that it is a fun color that is very "on trend" and looks great with the wood floors and/or cabinets and stainless steel appliances that many of us have these days...
Anyway, David and Alli, the Dill Pickle looks great in your room. I tried it on my walls recently (hoping it would like yours does), and it didn't look right at all in my space. :( bummer. I also quite like your color in the bedroom... it isn't something that I would ever think to choose myself.
I like this apartment, the wall colors are well chosen and I think they go very well with the tones and colors of the furniture and accessories in the 2 rooms.
I can really relate to your color tips and resources too, personally I've found more inspiration from badly painted places and paint swatch names than I have from most other places...
Thanks for your feedback, good and bad. The two of us have had a blast reading all this, it's very funny.
For the answers to the random questions, the wall sconces are from Pearl River Mart in NYC. They have a website at www.pearlrivermart.com, but I couldn't find the actual lamps on there to provide a link. They're cheap, too, $25 or so.
The bedroom color is Sienna Clay, which is not really peach brandy at all. It's very funny, once the images are down-res'd for the web, the colors change quite a bit. Which in a color competition is ironic. I don't think the ultimate concern with this contest is whether you like the color, since you really can't totally tell, more if it's used well or not. The question it asks is "How skillful is my color," which I think refers to the contrast of the pink against the green, or the maroon or cherry wood in that room. Not if you like the shade of the colors chosen.
But, ultimately, thanks for all of your comments. And yes, Steve, it was intended with a sense of humor. Well put.
I love the green. I've always been a fan of that color. When I get my own place, green will definately feature somewhere.
personally, i think your color is very skillful. and liking colors aside, they all "feel" good to me from the pictures!
honestly, i love greens but these owners are lacking in their choice of furnishings and decoration. it appears very muted and sloppy and clashes with the potential palate they started with on the walls. everything in the room is so drab and weighs down the wall color so much that it doesn't work in the space or stand out. the bedroom is nicer, but again. side thought: ...that empty picture frame. wtf?
