apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Why I use color:

I use color because it keeps my apartment visually interesting and keeps me inspired.

2 Good color tips:

1. Using small bursts of strong colors can give them more of a visual presence than huge color fields.

2. Think of white as a color - not a neutral.

2 good color resources:

1. Vintage books (for color palette inspiration and to pile in places that need a little color)

2. Thrift store paintings and prints

Great entry, in contention. But what happens when you need to read Gray's Anatomy from the bottom of the pile?

Can I have your kitty? Oh, and yes...love the room too...

Props to another Snowshoe owner!

This is a cozy space. But, I'm not sure I'm "getting" the color story here. It doesn't have to be wild and crazy, but I feel as if it needs to be more than an (awesome, by the way) lamp and two throw pillows. Could you talk a little bit more about what you were trying to do? Did you paint the walls?

How does everyone get their pets to pose so well? My dog must be camera shy.

posted by Cait on 2006-10-27 17:47:05

also wondering how everyone gets pets to pose so well, my cat just runs right at the lens anytime I bring out a camera, millions of pics of her nose.

I like the colors from accessories here (white incl.), and the carmel is something I haven't seen a lot of lately.

Very inspirational. I don't think this one will win because the colors are understated, but I love how this person managed to inject a very interesting color combination in the room with essentially white/beige walls and white bedding. I guess I no longer have an excuse.

Its subdued and quirky at the same time, which I like a lot. Your art and books are wonderfully displayed. Its a relief not to see any acid green today. In contention!

i agree silli, this won't get a lot of votes because the colors are understated. but i really like this room. it's not my style but the colors are comfortable and remind me of my grandma's (in a good way). this looks like a home, not a rental. and if you look, everything is very coherent without being matchy matchy. i love the painting on the wall with the books, it matches the floor and wall color and im so glad its not a tv. question about the books - are both stacks truly freestanding, how do you get one out? and what is the tall stack leaning on (looks like pipes)?

your bedroom is really sweet!

--the headboard is fantastic!
--love your simple pillows
--love the lamp

SUPER FUN HEADBOARD!! Nice wallcolor also...very romantic.

posted by Amy on 2006-10-27 20:05:53

Thanks everyone! The headboard is totally granny - I inheirited it from my great aunts beach house. The mirror and lamps are great thrift store finds I've been dragging around with me for years. My cat is a total ham for any and all cameras and the books are propped against a pipe.

Oh! And if I want to read greys anatomy I have to save up for one of those DWR stacking shelves things.

Cozy room, I would be comfortable here. And I totally am stealing your giant stack of books idea, I love that!

posted by lucy on 2006-10-28 01:36:54

Now that's a cute cat! And by the way, I love your lamp too. I also really like the unpredictable way you stacked your books. So much cuter than the expected book case.

I LOVE that headboard against that color wall. Is that a new headboard or vintage?

posted by DJ on 2006-10-27 16:33:52

I am also wondering about that headboard. Where did you get that!

posted by laura on 2006-10-27 16:35:16

Such a cute bedroom...the books themselves are artful in a sense- all those slices of colour with the bindings.

I think the only thing I would have done is add some sort of patter or colour with the duvet cover...

Such a cute place- and extra kudos considering it's a rental!

oooh cute. where'd you get your mirror?

*kicking myself for another expensive mirror i wish i hadn't bought*

Great headboard--so pretty! You'll have that forever.

I absolutely love this space. The furniture is more stunning than anything, and in my opinion, wokring with white furniture is very tricky.
Wondreful.

do you know who the artist of that painting is? I have seen it at Benny's Burritos and always liked it.

I really dislike catas, but there is something really cute about yours.

I have that same mirror! That headboard is amazing!

I have to agree with Alicia re: not being overly impressed with this entry. Is stacking books really that revolutionary? As a Ph. D student, I've got that look all over my place out of necessity. The first photo is quite nice and cozy, especially with the white against the taupeish walls, but the second photo is blurry and I can't even see the painting, which I guess is the color element. I am only registering this opinion because I was surprised by how uniformly people were supporting this entry, while being very critical of others, particularly for their poor photo submissions.

posted by Tara Emelye on 2006-10-28 14:17:28

The second photo doesnt look blurry to me at all, perhaps it is your screen?

posted by C on 2006-10-28 18:59:24

I guess its just me since based on the comments posted everybody seems to like this room. Two thoughts went through my head when I saw the pictures, the first, where's the color and the second, looks like a thrift shop.

I think that's it. That's the color I want for my living room. What color is that paint?

Pleeeassse?

I love this place. I have the same Keene framed picture of the little girl ant Grandma's house.

Very homey, pretty and comfortable. Obviously doesn't take a Ph.D to see that :)

Shows your personality. Some people don't seem to get that aspect of "design"

It's not simply color etc...it's what is behind that..and the feeling that one gets from a certain space. The colors here, although not bold, give me a certain feeling. Which is what color is all about.

I like your space...good job :)

You've made so much out of so few elements; it's so great to see someone with the confidence to keep things simple. The room flows so beautifully from object to object, each one intelligently chosen and obviously cherished. I love the headboard, the books, the hammy cat -- it all works. Congratulations for making it happen with limited means!

posted by HM on 2006-10-30 04:47:45

I generally like the color combo - however this just screams for a replacement of the white bedding. The white furniture works very well; the white comforter not so much. Maybe make or buy a duvet cover in the blue from the lamp? Great headboard and I love your cat too :-)

posted by PT on 2006-10-30 10:29:42

I love your room - especially the headboard...and the lamp...and the wall color. By the way, my cat looks exactly like yours!

posted by Ellen on 2006-10-30 11:36:24

FWIW, the second photo looks quite blurry to me. It looks like the pictures I take if I turn the flash off and then try to steady the camera with my hands, even though it's shooting at a low shutter speed. The books make it apparent. I don't think I should be able to read all the titles on that stack, but I think I should be able to make out that they are letters and not dark smudges.

I support the idea of shooting without a flash, though. It does make things look more real. It's just that sometimes you need a tripod or something else to keep the camera still.

Delicious color... I'd like to know what brand/paint name it is, too. Actually, it is very much like what I did in my living room, which was Benjamin Moore, "Wheatfield."

This is an adorable entry. I love the Keene-inspired paintings and the books stacked with the perky bird on top. That headboard is TD4!

you so cheated by getting your kitty to sit perfectly on the bed like that. this is the cutest, quaintest bedroom--not what i would do in mine, but the guest room of my dreams. and um, i LOVE that you just stacked the books on the wall. seriously. it can't be easy to get one out, but i really like how vintage-shop it looks.

posted by Shannon on 2006-10-31 19:56:41

But I should add. Caulk aside, I really like the second picture, especially how the art on the wall works with the wall color.

posted by Mat on 2006-11-03 11:39:50

I voted in contention because the white caulk on the baseboard draws my eyes a lot. Maybe consider going over it with a brown/bronze?

posted by Mat on 2006-11-03 11:38:27

I love the old-fashioned, detailed headboard, and I like how you set the whites of the bed against the caramel walls so that they pop out (they'd have next to no impact against white walls).

I'm delighted that you have books in your bedroom, although I agree with some others that stacking doesn't make them very accessible! But books (and kitty) make a bedroom feel home-y to me. I also liked seeing how a normal number of varied, random colors actually looks a bit like part of the decor when set against that caramel wall color. Interesting that it works.

I like your turquoise and orange-red accents against the more neutral background. Very nice colors.
