#58 - Janell's Fun Unwind

Name: Janell M.
Location: Upper Marlboro, MD
Type: 2-bedroom/2 bath lofted condominium

Why I use color:

I use color because it is an incredible vehicle of expression and it works wonders in dictating my mood. After a hard day's work, it's great to come home and unwind in a room painted in a color which makes me feel happy, relaxed, excited or whatever it is that I want to feel at the moment.

Each room in my condo is painted a color that I adore and that makes me feel comfortable, and each room's decor illustrates a different aspect of my personality. It feels great to live in a space that is truly representative of me at my best.

2 Good color tips:

1. Choose colors from which you derive some sort of joy, peace or pleasantry. I strongly believe that color affects mood. Each color that I chose in my home positively affects my mood. For example, my bedroom is painted two shades of sage and is accented with taupes, bronzes and browns. Those colors remind me of tranquility and therefore cause me to feel peaceful and relaxed. So, each time I enter my room, I naturally feel at ease because of the room's earthy tones.

2. Choose one or two main colors for your room, but accent the room with patterns or prints of complementing colors. You may not have enough rooms in your home dedicate to ALL of your favorite colors, so accenting rooms with more of your favorites is a great way to ensure that none of your beautiful favorite colors are left out. And if you're having a hard time choosing a color for your room, get inspiration from something you plan to put in that room---a colorful rug or wall hanging, a vase, toss pillows, ANYTHING! You bought those accessories for a reason! Show them off!

2 good color resources:

1. It may sound strange, but one of my favorite color resources is my own closet. I always buy clothes that I absolutely adore in an array of colors. My dining room is painted turquoise because I LOVED a turquoise sweater that I bought a few years back. I knew then that something in my home was going to be teal or turquoise!

2. My other favorite color resource is my local home improvement store. The paint swatches there are arranged by color, so it really lays out tons of options all in one place. Plus you can take the sample cards home and see how they work with the lighting in your room, existing furnishings, etc. You can really have a blast in Home Depot or Lowe's!

I like the back wall in the top picture, but what's going on with the wall on the left with the mirror? All in all, a little technicolor for me, but I dig it.

that wall needs a second or third coat is what's going on.

agreeing with angelune -- from a technical perspective - that wall looks unfinished...and drippy.

I agree with Kathryn and Angelune. I couldn't live in this space but there is color all right. Slightly too packed with Ikea-ish fixtures for my tastes, though the designer is quite creative.

Sweet merciful crap. I'm dry heaving. Is this an apartment or a psychological experiment?

I think it needs a little fine-tuning, but the creator is definitely creative and talented. The multi-coloured wall is great.

To "My eyes are burning", try putting your real name if you are going to be so mean. I am really shocked by some of the comments. People have put their living space on display because they are proud of it and by making ridiculous comments it most likely offends the owner and does nothing to help them improve their surroundings. By the way, please point me in the direction of your entry.

the multi-color wall is very fun and well done, but i feel that the other two pink walls are overkill. as others have said, the pink wall with the mirror needs a second or third coat.

as for the blue room, i dislike the color but i like the creative use of those colored balls and the coordination with the accessories. the curtains though do not seem like a skillful use of color, since it neither fits with the clean lines of the dark brown furniture nor does anything for the bright blue color scheme.

It's comments like those Heather that made me call them assholes and ask to see their spaces.I really like how daring you are with your space and I adore hot pink!

I like that multi-colored wall, it reminds me of facets in a gem stone.

The colors are bright and definitely telegraph a youthful and energetic vibe. The sharp angles in the accent wall painting, however, aren't good feng shui and would leave me feeling tired. I do wonder what the natural lighting in the room is like as that could make all the difference.

I like the fact that you have chosen to give each room a distinctive, strong personality. And that you chose colors that you love to wear and that you know have a positive affect on how you feel.

I like that faceted pink wall a lot - it reminds me of homes built in the 60s that have those exposed rock walls inside. I love those! That wall feels like a fun, irreverant take on that.

Interestingly, as far as the feng shui goes, I always have a hard time personally getting out of bed in the morning when my enitre room is calm and pastel - I need a shock of color to energize me for the morning. I'm a weirdo though, I've lived with a red wall in the bedroom and it suited me very well. (Although, I think the mirror reflecting all that would drive me insane - I'd put a piece of art there instead, but that's just me.)

I'd like to see the space with different furniture, and I think I might do something different with the other walls, but that one faceted pink wall is really, really lovely and well-executed to me. :)

But...let's not talk about the other room. :p

I love your wall colors! The hot pink and the geometric looking wall look great together. I'm with some others who said the room would look even nicer if you painted that wall on the left white instead of pink.

I like the blue wall color with the white trim. I don't love it with the dark furniture though. I would either run with the blue/brown scheme and lose the light curtains, or, paint the furniture white. Both rooms are creative and, with a bit of fine tuning, would be great! :)

Love this creative use of color! It's bold and unique design! In the second picture I kept imagining a dark wood floor with that color blue - how striking that would be!! Great use of color - love it! Good Luck!

LMAO!!! Oh dear. I thought I was going to wet myself!! That is FUNNY people .. get a funny bone.

"Sweet merciful crap. I'm dry heaving. Is this an apartment or a psychological experiment?"

But alas, I don't quite agree with the above statement's fervor. I quite like the first picture's idea. It's very creative .. I've never seen the color blocking thing done in shapes that weren't true squares/rectangles .. so at least that was inventive. The colors work well together, though I do agree .. something funny is going on with the wall behind the mirror. It looks like someone was trying to cover up grafitti in patches or something.

All you need are a whole lot of pillows on the floor and that space is MEGA cozy.

The second picture seems so contrived. The IKEA bubble things, the window treatment nor the mirror on the table truly fit the room. That blue is QUITE pretty, especially since you have it running through your chair fabric. I like the blue of the wall and brown of the furniture coupling. Rethink this room and give it some time. It could become a real winner.

Hey Janell, I've found a soul mate! Check out #55 Midwest. I like your place.

I like your color choices, but I think your place needs a tiny bit of refinement. That wall color in your first photo is gorgeous, but deserves better treatment. I think you need some stain kill or some primer on the one wall. It baffles me that you have taken the time to do the intricate work on the wall behind the TV, but have not made the needed repair to this beautiful wall. And about that wall, I think it is overdone and competes with the beautiful color unnecessarily. I would much rather have seen a large painting instead of this intricate design done on a wall that is a very strange shape. Indeed, the wall alone (painted white)could have been a work of art just because of its shape. Please get rid of the grey furniture and go totally glam. I get the feeling you are a very glamorous person. I would love to see a pair of silver shoes casually placed on your floor.

I really love the lamp in the first photo, this is in keeping with a very glam look that you could pull off easily with some refinement. I hope you win a prize so you can replace those pink fuzzy things with white fur. And your furnitures should be updated to white so that it pops.

For your second room, again that color is extremely lovely, but you need some pop. Again, white furniture would make a greater impace than the dark pieces that you have. With a tiny bit of tweaky, you could have an incredibly glamorous and sophisticated space. Also, I love the art on the walls in the second photo. did you make them?

Wow. That back wall in the first pic is AMAZING. Really. I am sure people are wowed when they see it. Also, don't mind about all the no way jose votes...I almost slit my wrists when I saw mine.

The first room is an interesting concept. It goes too far in its monochromatism with the accessories and it definitely needs another coat or two. The second is just way off though I can almost see what you were going for.

I was just looking at this again and while I don't like the second room as a whole, its pieces to me are lovely. Those curtains are beautiful and so is the fixture, I just don't like it with the 3D circles on the wall.

BUT...I wonder what it would look like if you took the 3d circles out of the blue room and put them in the pink one. Then, you took the frilly pink satin tablecloth and chandelier-ish lamp out of the pink room and put them in the blue room. Then the colors would have some contrast but the style would be consistent. I think if the modern IKEA-y pieces were taken out of the blue room, it would look like one of those Cynthia Rowley Swell rooms.

posted by DJ on 2006-10-31 18:49:34

I agree with Peggy. I think you are about three-quarters of the way to sophisticated glam. I wouldn't have chosen to do the mosaic treatment on the back wall in the pink room, because it's an angled wall - would have looked better if the wall were symmetrical. But, it's a eye-catching and creative look. The other walls are too dark, I would have chosen a light (not baby) pink. The grey looks a bit cheap, and I hate the table skirt and lamp. What would look fabulous in here is more pink, white and chrome. A vintage arc floor lamp would be a good addition to this room - almost everything is at the same level, and the tv really sticks out.

The blue room would also be improved with more white contrast, especially the drapes, and a different finish on the chandelier.

But kudos to you for brave color choices!

The angular wall is an original, fun touch and it did make me think of those 60's rock walls.

But... The color scheeme seems too intense and one-note for me. Another contestent mentioned haveing rooms "talk" to one another by sharing color schemes. I think pulling a little bit of blue in the pink room and a little pink in the blue room would have made it a more successful entry.

Of course, it's your house and if it makes you happy that's what counts. Thanks for sharing!

Interesting. I think the back wall in the first pic is also striking as someone suggested. But to make people appreciate it's value in this room you have to really think through everything else around it.
Here's some rules.

1) Limit the palette of the furnishings - you could make everything here black, white, chrome, satin steel or mirrored.
2) Include fewer, larger pieces - small knicknacks will get lost.
3) For a feature like a chandelier - either have one larger grand one, a row of three about the size you have, or a contemporary one that is more a floor to ceiling job - approximately 4-6 feet in length.
4) Hide items like TVs and other functional goods in cabinets - a nice big black one or a white one. They just look neutral and bland in the space.
5) More and more lighting options - that wall really needs some recessed lighting to focus solely on it. But there's lots of room in a space like this for some great floor lamps with soft white shades or noguchi paper lamps - hanging, table or floor.

Good luck - always worthwhile trying something a bit different.
