Name: Jenna
Location: Jackson Heights, Queens
Type: One-bedroom rental
Why I use color: It's a great way to take ownership of a rental and it adds a bit of zing to my art. I know there will be some serious repainting in my future when I move (which is a long way off) but it'll be worth it. I love waking up in my Herbal Garden Green room (which, actually, is a bit darker than it reads in the photo--see the Behr website for a true look-see at the color).

In the photo with the mirror, you can see the Surfer Blue hallway--and that leads to a dark chocolate brown room which leads to my perfect lipstick red office. It's fun to watch the looks on friends' faces when they come over the first time--I've been told that the colors just make the place instantly inviting. And that feels pretty good. (And no, I didn't pose the cat on the bed--he was there when I went into shoot. And you just don't move the Maynard.)
2 Good color tips:
1. Impulse purchases are great if you're buying a sweater but if you're going to put some time and money into painting your place, it doesn't hurt to put a little more time into your decision. Hang color chips on your wall, paint a small swatch, or do whatever you need to do to make sure you won't get sick of the color. But--even if you do live with it and end up hating it anyway, just paint it over.
2. Screw trends. Go with colors you enjoy.
2 good color resources:
1. That big wall of paint chips at Home Depot.
2. Go out for a walk (or a drive or a train ride or a flight) and see how different colors work together in nature. Bring the colors that catch your eye outside into your home.
um... I can't see any pictures...
That green with the blue is gorgeous. And the mirrored vanity...!
Thanks. I can see them now. And I like that shade of green. I always have trouble when people put blue with green (don't know why, the sky and the grass & trees do it all the time), but I do like that shade of green.
Gorgeous.
Are those glass doorknobs on the bedposts? And the handmade wooden stool with the glassy cold vanity is inspired.
I'm pretty sure that's the same behr colour we have in our den - we liked it because it matched the trees outside the window!
Love as well the vanity/stool combo
Same color green that I painted my den. Love it!
I might have to paint my office this color. I'm scared of going too appley but this looks perfect.
cute kitty!
Hi all,
I love that a few of you have used the same color. It completely grabbed me when I was picking out paint chips but I held off for quite a while (mostly because it's a doozy of a room to paint--the walls curve at the top so you actually have to extend the color onto a drop of the ceiling--and then there's a lip that makes a natural end point for the color). But even my super was impressed with what I'd done.
Jennie -- the color is even less apple-y than it looks in the pictures. It definitely lives up to its name of Herbal Garden.
Juliet -- the glass knobs came with the headboard--they're pretty much the same size as doorknobs. I'm thinking about getting some smaller ones to screw into the wall around the vanity table so that I can hang jewelry from them but it might tip the room into being a bit too precious so I'm holding off for now.
Anyway, I'm glad you all liked it (so far)...
Jenna
I love the color combination! It is so calm.
Where did you get that vanity? It's gorgeous...
The stool is a nice counterpoint to the vanity, and I love that you chose a *real* green (as opposed to dusty, sagey colors). Of course, lots of bonus points for the cat--tuxedo kitties are my favorite!
I LOVE green and generally HATE (sorry) blue, so part of the reason I Insta-Finalist-ed you was because you made me like the blue nearly as much as I love the green.
And that shade of green is GORGEOUS. I never would have (looking at the chip, I lurk in Home Depot) guessed such a dark color wouldn't shrink your space, but it just looks rich and really nice.
Great vanity and the stool is a fun contrast.
I may even know what to do with my ornate metal bedframe now, which was kinda overwhelming me, so thanks for that too.
PS. That looks like my cat Hydrox's big brother. Too cute.
Ironically, your cat is just plain old black and white. ;-)
The cat is the room's necessary touch of black -- and he probably thinks he's doing a favor to provide it.
I really LOOOVE this. now this is what an urban cabin should look like, with the herby walls and the wooden stool. I think the mirrored vanity is a great touch. There's something art-nouveau about that and the cosmetics.
I'm in love. That's what I was trying to do in my office. Might have to repaint now.
Anna -- The table was a surprise find at Bombay Company a few years back. I found the mirror at Target and the stool is from a home design shop in Chattanooga.
And Angelune -- thanks a bunch. I'm not sure if I should admit this (as I'm sure it'll scare some of you) but there's another very outdoorsy element in the room--my bedside lamp is a chainsaw-carved wooden bear statue. It's one of my favorite things.
very pretty- colors work very well together
Enough with the green already! It seems like 75% of the submissions are of green rooms. Its green overload. I need pumpkin, more yellow, some blue thats more than just a reflection or peep in the corner, some red, something other then 24/7/365 green.
And yes, I know I'm being cranky. But, still.
Green is the new black.
Or, more appropriately per last year's contest, green is the new orange.
I love it! Looooooooooove the vanity. Don't hang too much around it, it's fantastic by itself. This space seems very minimal but not trendy, very homey (in a good way) with the choice of decorations. The only thing I hate is that 3 bulb standing lamp by the bed. Ouch, my eyes hurt thinking about turning it on. It just doesn't go, it's too regular. Is there anyway to see the other fabulous rooms you teased us with?! I want to see more blue and the lipstick red office!! Thanks for sharing.
for some reason, i'm just not crazy about it. it looks all a little k-mart to me. like you bought all of their semi-trendy stuff for every style out there and stuck it all together. maybe its the paintings above the bed that throw me off.
Hey, no fair teasing with other rooms.
And, while we're at it, no augmenting with other Flickr photos, either.
I like the shade of green that was chosen, but the execution is a little dull. I think maybe there needs to be more contrast to make it more interesting, or to bump up the energy a bit.
No worries Patrick. It's fun to tease but I'd never add photos.
I like the paintings, at least from what I can see. Did you paint them or where did you get them?
I promise -- this is my last time posting for tonight. I'm just answering questions but it feels a bit like cheating anyway. This whole thing is rather odd.
Anyway, Pixie, I bought the paintings at Tamarack Gallery in Omena, Michigan. I can't remember the artist's name at the moment but they're by an outsider artist in Michigan who usually does wood carvings. These were two of his first paintings--they're on old boards. The gallery is quite a treat -- I definitely recommend it if you happen to be in Omena, MI (or within 100 miles).
Hey Jenna, no worries... was actually refering to another entrant.
And I'm guessing incandescent light (or halogen or sunlight) brings this green to life, more than these pics reveal.
See, people? Neutral kitty. Then your kitty is an integral part of your decorating scheme.
Nice color, but I am not feeling where the creativity comes in outside of choosing two prevelant colors from the paintings for the wall color and bead-spread.
Duh... If only I could spell bed spread.
I want to see more, it is hard to tell from these 2 pictures if there is an overall wow factor, or if you just picked a great paint color.
Who cares about paint colors - that Maynard is a hunk!
What can I say, but green is my very, very favorite color. Nice!
I'm with Dave. Feel green overload in this contest.
If it had been any other color overload, I would've been okay (last year's orange would've been fine by me), but I'm just not a big fan of green. Only way I like injecting green into a room is by adding plants.
Have never had my colors done, but I know I have zero items of green clothing in my closet. I already know I look terrible and sickly when I wear anything green.
I have lots of yellow and red shirts because people compliment me when I wear those colors. Guess that's why I felt comfortable with various shades of orange walls.
So...question is: is that why I've never considered green walls? Wonder how many of us avoid room colors that based on instinct or advice of color consultants, are not/should not be in our wardrobes.
I wish I had Jenna's style. I love the colors (and the cat -- can I have him?), but I'd never think of putting them together myself. Maybe Jenna could makeover my house?
the combo of your green wall, wood stool and mirrored chair and table is really nice.
I like how Jenna has achieved a color combination that is soothing and appropriate for a bedroom, but not bland. The colors offset the hardwood floors well, too.
So pretty! In the first picture especially, love the green walls, the paintings, the bed linens --they radiate simplicity, unclutteredness, harmony, brightness.
And the cat! Brilliant design element.
That looks JUST like my cat. I have a female Maynard. Does he by any chance have a white splotch in the middle of his black back, 'cause that would be freaky.
I'm all about the green myself this year, so yay, green.
More green! I guess every AT contest needs it's eames chair.
Lovely bed
Yours is off to a great start. But like many of the entries the color isnt being as skillfully used as it could be. Dont just use the green and the blue as a backdrop - really pick it up and run with it!
I like how you conveyed the name of the paint. It truly does look herbal. The lamp shows up nicely against it. The pairing of the table & stool are brilliant! Great photography, too.
Would be better if you had an orange cat.
that is an eames chair? i thought you just made it in the back yard, and thought - okay - nice...
i like the colors, and am going to come across a beyotch - but couldn't the trim around the floors have been touched up/even painted something other than left the dirty/scraped up white color.
like your style - really...
i am in love with that shade of green.
cute cat too.
not thrilled with the furniture, however.
no -- it's not an Eames chair -- it was made by a Florida artist, and I bought it in a high-end design shop in Chattanooga. As for the white paint on the trim, it was fresh paint on old moldings--it's part of the charm of living in an old NYC rental building. I should have scraped the green splotches here and there that hit it after I painted but I just haven't gotten around to it.
Jenna
The second picture is just unfortunate.
