Fall Colors 2006 : Honorable Mention #3

(This is the third of our 6 honorable mentions, which go to submissions that did not make the finals but really rock. They are awarded purely at the judge's discretion. Each honorable mention receives a special gift from CB2.)

11-7-kyra.jpgFrom Kyra & Robertson Hartnett:

"We especially love the first photo of this space. Of course, we approve of the bold, yet livable wallpaper. The sleek, black tulip chair is a lovely complement to the wallpaper - both in color and form - and offers a striking highlight for the space...

A touch of black is essential in every room and this is a great example of how to accomplish that. The warm tone, strong woodgrain and clean lines of the lovely desk add a richness and clarity to the room. Also, the pop of color behind the bookshelves really plays off of the flowers in the wallpaper and provides a sharp backdrop for the sparse arrangement of books and photos. Finally, the orange phone and desk clock are great accents.

Congratulations, Jason and Janet, on your Honorable Mention!

Ha! Here's a quote from the designaddict link:

"I thought the desk was ikea like and very derivative"

Get over yourself! I want to pull that guys panties over his head.

Wow, another one of my personal Top Tens.

I still predict we will see this space in a shelter pub by year's end.

I think the desk is GORGEOUS. I'm so curious to see who the finalists are, because so far, I love all the honorable mentions and feel like they should have been finalists.

Congratulations! I really enjoyed this space.

This is a fabulous space and the desk is gorgeous, and so far from anything in IKEA- what a joke! Good luck and look forward to seeing more of your classy work.

Lighten up, it looks like a desk you put together yourself with an allen wrench and an instruction pamphlet written in Swedish and English.

JC's commentary is just the kind of detritus we don't need on this blog, or any blog. Too bad there isn't a way to remove junk like that.

Jason and Janet's space is smartly put together and sophisticated, and you can't say a single bad thing about it, even if it isn't everyone's taste. It's not mine, but it sure is beautiful.

Blogs are just about the last real free speech in this country. Please don't advocate selective editing of posts you don't like. Thanks

Is it just me or am I totally missing Honorable Mention #2?

Suddenly I see it. Nevermind!

oh no, jc, are your sour grapes spilling over from design addict? Admit it, jason lees makes good looking stuff that people want. They may just be folks without design degrees, but still...

JC, that's fine if you don't like the desk, but to say it looks like Ikea is ridiculous and makes people not take you seriously. If Ikea looked like that, I'd be happy to have my entire house furnished by Ikea.

A great deal of Jason Lees work looks very much like (not inspired by but carbon copy of) Gilbert Rohde designs for Herman Miller from the 30's.

and look at this dresser in the Brooklyn Museum:

I do not believe the similarity is a coincidence. It's pretty but not original stuff and frankly if I want to buy a 1939 design I'd much rather have the original. Good design should be about evolution from good ideas of the past with new ideas, not just copying good designs from 70 years ago. Now ladies, ready ... aim ...

What do the judges think? The desk was the one thing in the room they neglected to mention.

posted by JC on 2006-11-09 12:22:40

JC apparently missed this sentence in the judges' explanation:

"The warm tone, strong woodgrain and clean lines of the lovely desk add a richness and clarity to the room."

JC... just saw your comment about "free speech." Take a look at the comments posted for Allison Arieff's Honorable Mention and you'll notice 2 different posts where it says, "[partial comment deleted by editors]" and "[second comment deleted by editors]". Somebody must have the same sentiments about unconstructive, vitriolic postings on blogs. If anything, I advocate thinking first about what you say and how you say it, and the effects of what goes out there for all the world to read...it's not about "censorship," but "responsibility."
