apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#11 - Jodi's Contrasting Accents

Name: Jodi
Location: Queens, NYC
Type: 1-bedroom, rental

Why I use color:

Bright colors make me happy. It's as simple as that. When I moved into my current apartment, it was a big white box that didn't get a lot of light. I decided to paint accent walls in the living room and dining area to brighten things up. Since the rooms are open to one another, I picked contrasting colors from a table runner that I love...

The bright aqua and orange make me smile every time I walk through the door. What's better than that? I also painted the back splash area of the kitchen a lime green. It picks up on the green of the tree outside my window and helps the space feel a little more connected to nature. All of the colors that surround me help me rejuvenate after a long day out and about in the big, gray city.

2 Good color tips:

1. If you are having trouble deciding on a color palette, find something you love to take the colors from. Maybe from a favorite painting, pillow or rug. In my case, I have a beautifully colored table runner that I pulled my three main paint colors from.

2. Paint one wall per room a bold color. It saves time & money by painting less and acts as a focal point in each room.

Favorite type and brand of paint:

Benjamin Moore

Great photos! I get a real sense of how some of those rooms are layed out. It's almost like I've lived there for 8 months...

I found the photos too tightly cropped to really see how the colour worked in the room (as opposed to in the photo).

Gorgeous! But a question - how do you know which room to paint if you're doing an accent wall? I've got big white rooms with awkwardly-placed doors and windows, and I can't tell what'll work.

Show us what the apartment looks like! Too many close up photos of walls. Maybe I'll send in a five photos of my favorite paint swatches from Home Depot.

I agree that I'd like to see how these colors are when you see the connection between spaces. I wholeheartedly agree the colors are fantastic.

While I do really like the colors she picked and how they look together between the rooms in the apartment, I would like to see more color interaction in each of the rooms individually. Each room seems kind of single color-- although a lovely one.

I have to agree about the photos being too tight. I'd like to get the big picture of how these rooms really look with color.

thanks everyone. sorry for not including a wider view of the space. are we allowed to put links in the comments to other photo locations? i don't want to break the rules, but let's just say there are other photos out there.

the living room & dining room are open to one another, with the aqua on the western wall and the orange on the northern wall with a bit of white in between the two.

colors are all benjamin moore - cool aqua, orange burst and tequila lime.

you should have panned out more in your pictures--I love the colors of your walls, but I can't tell how they work in the larger sceme of things.

Yeah, not enough shown to give a feel of the space and how the colors interact. And if there are other photos out there why not include a broader shot?
