#13 - Dldawson's Ever Changing Moods

Name: Dldawson
Location: Montclair, NJ
Type: 3 bedroom colonial house built in 1920-owned

Why I use color:

color is very mysterious. it can change your mood and affect you
psychologically. it can make a space seem larger and more grand. or it can make the same space feel smaller and intimate depending on the choice...

i get bored easily and love to change the colors in my house.this is done simply by repainting and or changing objects around. i am a painter and i think of my living space the same way i think about painting. So it is not just color but how colors relate to each other. also depth of field and value--how light or dark a color is. i use color as a way to move a viewer's eye through the space. and to give depth to a view.

my house is fairly open so you can see several rooms at once so all
of the color decisions have to work together. i like to have a focal
point or pay-off as you look through the rooms.

2 Good color tips:

1-though paint is a fairly cheap and easy way to get color in your
house it is also good to choose rugs, lamps, art, plants and flowers
etc help to create harmony and contrast.

2-experiment--nothing is permanent.---even that lime green you
thought would be perfect for the front door can be easily changed.

Favorite type and brand of paint:

i like ralph lauren lately--the suede finishes-- they are very matte and absorb the light. i also keep acrylic artists paints on hand and custom mix if the color is not quite right when i get them home

One of the best so far! The wall above what seems to be the kid's bed is GORGEOUS.

This is beautiful! I love the dark color over the white in the foyer. Is that black?

What a lovely and sophisticated kids' room!

Are those Jonathan Adler lamps next to your bed?
I love them! I just installed that Nelson bubble lamp over my dining table, and I was considering a JA lamp on the other side of the room to complement it.

You have a really lovely space!

Beautiful home, wish I could see more of it. I love your description of how you view paint. I'm a painter too, so it's always about experimentation for me.

What intrigues me most about your home is that the color choices are bold, yet you've achieved softness. Great balance, what I am always trying to achieve in paintings.

Hope we see you in the finals!

BEAUTIFUL! This is exactly the kind of place that makes me think about using something other than white paint on my walls. That gray color in the entryway is so warm and soft-looking...perfect.

please let there be an entry that is not mid-century modern martha stewart meets room & board with a dash of dwr thrown in! it would be nice to see an entry that is truly about using color as more than a decorative element.

i agree that this is a gorgeous home but i'm not really getting wowed by the color usage. i feel it needs a little bit more 'oomph' for a Color Contest. but i do i do i do looove this house and the decor.

I'm sorry, this is nice but not striking or inspirational. I don't want to be rude, though, it is a nice home.

Hey! I like your paint colors. Can you tell me where you got those frames in the picture at the very top of this page? Thanks!

I like it when people do things that are subtly a bit off. So I like how you arranged the framed art very symmetrically in the brown color block on the wall, but did not place the sideboard directly in that same color block but a bit to the right.

Much more interesting and intriguing than the usual predictable arrangement (see Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and any host of boring HGTV shows).

Love your home. Beautiful, calm, but fun and intriguing in an understated, restful way.

can you share the colors:
bedroom (grown up) wall
behind the sideboard
and hallway?

Wow. I can't believe that's a child's room. I can't imagine anyone would feel free to be a kid in a space like that. Beautiful home but I don't get much of a sense that anyone lives there.

An absolutely lovely space. For color though I would have liked if the living room in the last photo was also painted a color to really define the molding. That room is a bit too white for me. White can be good on it's own but it seems like there is too much of it especially when the entryway has the lower white tongue and groove board.

I agree...love the artwork above the children's room bed. And the two matching bedside lamps look great against it. Very cool since it's symmetry on top of asymmetry. That kid has a more stately room than me!!

Man cannot live on neutrals alone! Great, beautiful, sophisticated backdrop.... now add some color! It's a wonderfully calming and elegant space - but it lacks daring where color is concerned

Your home looks better than the interior decorated mansions I have visited in the Clair. A small well decorated home in the here needs publicity. So, can you join the next home tour?

Good luck finalist!!
