apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#14 - Brie and Dave's Saturated Sanctuary

Name: Brie and Dave
Location: St. Petersburg, FL
Type: 1100 sqft. 2 bedroom concrete block home built in the 70’s. Owned: 3ish years (for Brie, the new wife, 1 year)

Why I use color:

I'm the kind of person that has every color of the rainbow in her wardrobe. There isn't a single color I wouldn't be willing to at least try and trust that I can make it work if I tell myself so...

10-11-green2.jpg

Green has been my favorite color for years now and I have always dreamed of a having a "green room" in which I imagined a variegation of green hues all somehow complementing one another in paint, upholstery, artwork and accessories.

When I moved into my husband's home 1 year ago, we had the whole house painted with the main living areas in 2 hues of green. Loved it and still love it today. However, dreams of an all green room quickly disappeared and were replaced with a more true-to-life balance of multiple colors that complement the wall colors without screaming "this is a green-themed room". Because I'm not a professional (rather the quintessential weekend hobbyist), I can't speak for the overall "accuracy" of my design concept, but I know what I like, and I like what I see. Thanks to the warmth color provides, our place genuinely feels like home, OUR home. Wish the pictures better conveyed that "ahhhhh" feeling.

((( I HAVE to say, even though I’m probably past my word count allotment: If I had the money, I would be purchasing all new furniture. Just a little disclaimer to say that I am not fond of the traditional stuff we have in our place, but it’s what was there when I moved in. Hopefully the readers/voters will take sympathy on a humble teacher’s plight and look past the overstuffed, rolled arms of my couches. )))

2 Good color tips:

Color Tip #1:

Be brave. Trust your instinct. But only if your instinct is to be brave. Hmm, what I mean is, don’t let others impose their ideas of “good color” on you. Let your gut be your guide; if you truly think avocado, citrus orange and fuschia can work in some capacity that will make YOU happy in YOUR space, then do it.

Color Tip #2:

By the same token, if you feel like you AREN’T brave enough for color, but you want to be, then DO let others impose their ideas of “good color” on you. And by THAT I mean, research, observe and absorb the colors around you in your day to day life: Billboards, posters, menus, cereal boxes, etc. Take note of the colors you surround yourself with in your daily routine and specifically look for colors and color-combos that jump out and grab you. Once this becomes a habit, you will have established a pattern that you can easily trace to discover the colors that make YOUR heart soar. (so cheesy, but SO true.) And of course check out design magazines, but only after you’ve begun to “own” color in the day-to-day stuff, that way you’ll be able to quickly assert what you do and don’t like.

Favorite type and brand of paint:

Sherwin Williams is what’s on our walls, Pesto and Vert Olive, but I like Behr paint a lot. Matte is my preferred finish.

This is one of the very few that I actually liked since they use real-world inspiration and don't have $30,0000000000000 home modification and furniture. It looks lived in, clean, chic instead of empty and blah. Of course a brand new or remodeled home with overpriced italian furniture will always look better, but if all you're changing is paint and pattern, this already won the prize in my book.

Where's the living room rug from? I'm looking for something similar. Thanks!

Wow, I love the color! It's a home that really looks lived in. It's simple, clean and something I could actually do at home. We'd all like to have the $$ for trendy new stuff, but that isn't reality! Thanks for sharing and being real. Love the flooring!

I think the rolled arm couch is lovely, as is the rest of your space. For someone on a budget, there's lots of style!

I have to agree with the above commenter. This looks wonderful, inviting, and not too expensive. I think the spirit of the contest is somewhat sullied when people start to think that entries should resemble magazine spreads, or that a contestant needs a squillion bucks to furnish their homes in a such a loving manner.

High marks from me. All the way!!!

I love this space. Your room looks very inviting and comfortable. I love your green room, it is fantastic! I love the yellow and black printed fabric that is on the throw pillows. Beautiful fabric! Please tell us where you found it.

The warm green goes well with the warmth of the wood floors. I find the art arrangment above the sofa a bit too disjoint to work well. The pieces are all fighting for attention, particularly the two almost-solid coloured pieces off to the right.

i think those black, white, and yellow floral pillows are made from the "mocca" fabric from reprodepot. i can't find it on their site anymore, but months ago (like...12!) i saved the fabric's representative image to consider using as a computer desktop graphic (but found it too busy and distracting).

not even sure if it's called "mocca," but that's how the file is name-saved on my comp. :)

The use of different greens is reall cool - even though greens aren't my thing. It works well from one room to the next. I'm not really loving the first picture...the combination of the pillows on the couch and the artwork is a little grating. There isn't enough contrast between the sizes of the artwork/mirrors and yet they're not all exactly the same size/proportions. You should break that up and do something more organic and less geometric. And also the couch should be grounded by a more solid coffee table...the perspex coffee tables are too light to balance out the artwork and make the room top heavy.

im having a hard time with this one, cause i cant get over my opinion that theres just too much stuff happening...

i guess the green is nice, but theres just too much green with the plants and the books and the fabric...all those pillows are too much and the lucite tables (i have the same ones! :) look wimpy in such a big space.

okay, looking back at your plea to ignore the traditional decor, i must apologize for coming off too harshly-- guess its just not my thing overall...but if you're happy, thats what counts!

That first photo is certainly arresting, but I'm sorry to say I'm just not feeling it, overall. Also, when I see a couch with that many big pillows, I can't help but think I'd have to chuck all but one on the floor to actually be able to curl up and relax. (Not that this point has a thing to do with color, but it does trip me up.)

Someone needs to get a level. That wall above the couch would be great if everything was straight. I enjoy the artwork, but I think busy artwork calls for minimal accessories around the room.

This is how green should be done if it must be done at all that is. Perfect hue.

Please give the brand and color name to KristinaXI...one of the entries from Chicago. I don't know where her green comes from but it needs an attitude adjustment.

As someone who is living with a few pieces of furniture I would love to replace (but can't afford to just yet), I really appreciate this entry. They've used color to transform the space and make it theirs. So the sofa isn't what you want. Someday you'll have the cash to buy the sofa of your dreams. Insta-finalist from me, because we're voting use of color, not greatest furniture.

hello - I echo st@cy's comment. the room would be so much more enjoyable if the eye was drawn to the art, rather than noticing that every single frame is crooked. Please re-hang!

Isn't the crookedness of the frames a lens artifact? I personally think the crookedness adds charm. :)

Mmm, all these greens are delicious! I'm jealous that you had the guts to paint everything - my entryway is almost the same green and my office is a lighter shade but if I painted my whole living room that gorgeous color we would be living in a cave. I may go cry now (out of jealousy!), your decor choices I'm not going to discuss, they all just make that green look SO GOOD!

I like the green on the walls, but those pictures over the sofa are driving me nuts because I just want to STRAIGHTEN THEM! I do like the paper lanterns over the armoire.

Thanks for the comments everybody. I really appreciate the constructive criticism as well. I have never entered a contest like this before so I'm lucky that at least a few of you liked it. :-)

Artwork: My word, I guess I should have noticed how badly my camera distorted the art wall. I'm a psycho when it comes to the level; I always have it out adjusting everything to perfection...but that so did NOT come through in the photo. Sorry about that.

This is the 3rd arrangement of the frames/artwork that I have tried and so far I have been happy with it, but not completely settled on it. I can see what people are saying about the disjointed-ness of it all. Would appreciate more thoughts on this.

Pillows: Yes, they are some Alexander Henry fabric "mocca" something from a local fabric store. The loveseat is actually rather deep so we like to have pillows behind our backs (they are down-filled) so we can sink back into them for comfort.

Rug: Have no idea where it's from. It was my husband's sister's before he got it from her.

Brie and David: You put zing into furnishings you already had---great! And about the rolled-arm couch---in 1957, we started (and lived with) Danish (what's now the retro-mid-century) furniture for 30 years. Now in our 70s, we appreciate the comfort provided by our rolled-arm loveseats; naps are definitely more comfy. I see a cycle here. Good luck!
