(Today is the last day for submissions!)
Name: Cedra
Location: Downtown, NYC
Type: Studio--350 SQ FT - Owned
Why I use color:
Color can revitalize an apartment and in turn, its owner! In July I broke up with my boyfriend and left town. When I came home, my cousin had repainted my entire studio apartment a pale chartreuse and hung blue curtains on the windows and new artwork on the walls...

She even made the zebra fabric pillowcase! I'm from the desert and the photo above the bed was taken by a friend on a motorcycle trip through California. Its the first thing you see when you enter the apartment. The apartment feels totally new and very serene and I was very happy to come home to a different environment. I never would have picked the colors myself but I love the combinations and the shot of color that wraps you when you walk into the room.
We'd painted the hallway a medium gray in 2006 and the coolness of that color compliments the cool greens and blues in the main room.

2 Good color tips:
Take a risk--move past colors you see everywhere.
Don't be afraid to mix colors, even in a small space.

Favorite type and brand of paint:
Benjamin Moore, eggshell finish. It's easy to clean and doesn't show irregularities in old walls as well as a flat finish.

I think the first thing I'd see is a stuffed animal on the bed, not the photo above it.

I love the rattan bins in your wall system - where did you get them?

Your cousin has a really big heart--and also isn't afraid of risk-taking! And I think she did a great job. I love the pale chartreus and blue together. But you know? In general (because I don't know the whole relationship you have with your cousin), I'd take the motive over the wall color anytime!

My comment didn't take. There are two photos of the bookcase. I like this place but there isn't enough to go on. It does look restful.

Nice place, but where's the 'fall' colour.

Very nice place.
I think the rattan baskets are from Ikea as goodnightdean has mentioned above.
Here is a little blurb on the baskets from the Domino magazine blog:

A very nice home, but in my opinion, not a contender for the fall colors contest. The only real use of color I see is on the bookshelf! It looks warm and inviting, though.

I would not be too happy if my cousin painted my walls.....but that's just me. No offense, but it would have been cooler had she purchased curtains that were the right length.
I love how the photo over your bed has a story behind it. You probably don't get bored of it...like you would if you took the photo yourself, but it still has a personal connection.

I don't get why people think the fall color contest has to be fall colors only. I love the beautiful cool, soothing feel of this space. I agree more pics would have been nice instead of two bookshelf shot.

Yes, it should be clarified that it's not a "Fall Colors" contest. It's just a color contest ... in the fall. :)

not a bold color contest stunner, but a lovely story and a nice place where I bet you love to live . . .
what a great cousin!

I think this is a lovely little place and the colors look real nice. The comment I have is on the photo of the three girls and the baby. There are two pictures of it - one on top of the radiator, hiding the AC unit and another on the wall next to a mirror. I just find it odd that there are two photos of the same thing (Or is it the same photo?) I just thought it was funny.
I love the story about the cousin painting your place - It makes your place even more interesting :)

What a cute story. I love that you've painted the insides of the expedit. Thats a very clever use of colour.....

Lovely space, though hard to get a sense of the color. I like all the zebra elements.

the photo on the wall and on the radiator are two completely different photos

What a lovely space and a lovely cousin. Having been through something similar, I can only say that friends and a welcoming home are the best medicine. Congrats on your new space.

The Expedit is painted?
It's subtle, if it is.
Lovely space, though I wish we could see a bit more of it.

I'm guessing the photos don't do this place justice (either that or my computer monitor). It looks pretty bland in the photos, but when you described it (the pale chartreuse and the blue), I could just see it. It sounds gorgeous.

I think the curtains are fine, you don't need them to go to the floor when there is a radiator sticking out. you can't close the curtains around a radiator when the heat's on (which is exactly when they would need to be closed.)
view kookamunga's profile
you don't need to close the curtains at all....she has blinds. She might as well just remove them....or have full-length ones since that would look better.
view st@cy's profile
They soften the windows and add color and if it's NYC its probably cold and she most likely closes the curtains for extra insulation. I think the length is retro and cool.

Lovely color combination..the use of cool and warm colors
together make for a vibrant room. Because they are subtle
in value, it also makes for a peaceful space. The single
photograph behind the bed brings it all together.
Great job! You and your cousin must be very close!

WHAT: Our Fall Colors Contest is a contest for all color lovers. We're looking for the boldest, most beautiful, most colorful home in the world.
Excuse me for misunderstanding the above paragraph.

As soon as you come in you see a bed? That is not very Feng Shui...
