apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#22 - Kathryn & Daniel's Bright Stripes, Big City

Name: Kathryn & Daniel
Location: Cooper Square, NYC
Type: 1 Bedroom Duplex, rental

Why I use color:

Upon moving in, our new apartment's rooms were all painted a timid
periwinkle. What we wanted was a home with lively colors that didn't
clash with the openness of our apartment, an airy duplex with large
windows and a view. Our goal was a space that was energetic and warm,
but also clean and modern...

Bedroom

We painted using neutrals to emphasize architectural details, choosing different tones of gray for walls, columns, and the ceiling, leaving trim and baseboards white. The contrast of similar grays helps bring out the depth of the space, and helps the rooms feel bigger.

Our apartment also has oddly shaped storage area underneath the staircase. We struggled for long time with what to do. Ultimately, we decided to make this the focal point of the downstairs. We draw attention to the wall using a horizontal striping pattern: orange, green, blue, black, tan and brown.

Dining Room & Kitchen

The bright stripes extend across the accent wall, and into the kitchen
area for continuity. Our striping theme extends to Dan's home office,
the bedroom, and into the bathrooms as well. Because we have a palette
of "our" colors to choose from, the color in our apartment never feels
overwhelming or repetitive.

2 Good color tips:

1. It can be difficult to choose a bold shade of color and know that you want to live with it for a long time. Instead, purchase a quart each of the colors you might want and go to an art supply store. Buy a large piece of poster board. Carefully paint some swatches of your desired color on the board. Hang the board up where you want to paint -- that way you can really see how and when the light in your apartment will affect the way the color is perceived.

Daniel's Home Office

Things that look great in the daylight can look wrong at night or when lit. This is especially important for ceiling colors. It also helps to write down the name and code of the colors on the board itself, in case you have a few similar shades on the board. (Similarly, you can also paint some smaller swatches on a card to fold up and bring when shopping. Hold up the card when considering accessories and you'll know if that vase, pillow, candleholder, etc. will fit into your space.)

2. Be on the lookout for accessories where you can slip in a
photograph. You can customize these accessories like picture frames,
trays, and more using your bold, beautiful colors. We found picture
coasters at Crate and Barrel, and slipped in striped squares of our
colors (cut from our swatch board) in the place of photographs. It was
easy, and resulted in perfectly coordinated coasters. And if you don't
like the effect, it's easy to change your mind.

OMG. Not to sound stalkerish, but i know exactly where you live. I pass your apt on the way home everyday and always wondered who lived in such a cool 2-story space. Good to know its decorated so wonderfully on the inside!

Thanks, all!

The spice rack is a Soho Spices magnetic spice rack. We got ours from Mxyplyzyk (their site says they're having a sale right now), but I'm sure you can find it elsewhere.

I had to abstain from voting on this one. I just couldn't decide. I almost clicked the long shot button, but that just didn't seem fair, there is obvious merit here. I may be biased because I think I am growing very tired of brown. (Remember last year when people were getting tired of chartruese?)

While, skillful, the place just looks to harsh to me. I would like to see a little more balance between yin and yang. That said, I absolutely adore the rectangle art on the wall by the bed (are those lights?). I also am extremely envious of your office space.

I agree with Peggy, an inventive use with the stripes but with an apartment that already is so angular the stripes come across as harsh. I think more curved shapes or even textures could have really softened the space.

I have to agree that while the space is beautiful, the colors are too strident on the striped wall and too bland everywhere else. And the blue isn't working for me at all. I think you should have gone with something warmer -- then the color pops would all tie together better.

I agree that brown can be tired. However, I find this entry's combination of brown with pops of color and lots of gray to balance everything very smart and appealing.

Thanks for the feedback, everybody!

@evenwhen: I bought the rolling cart from the MUJI store in the lower level of the MoMA Design Store in Soho. They call it their "Utility Wagon." I added the magnetic canisters, purchased at Tiny Living in the East Village. The letter trays are by Office Basics, purchased online from See Jane Work.

@edina monsoon: If you could peek around the corner, you'd see why the birds are there. Guess you'll all just have to vote us in the finals to see! :)

@guido: We're both involved in the web design industry, but this was our first attempt at translating our aesthetic from pixels to paint.

This is right up my ally stylistically speaking. Love the use of stripes on that accent wall and then carrying it in 1 or 2 stripes in the kitchen, bedroom and home office, very good idea and adds a splash of color in what is otherwise a coolish neutral space, but that's good as I think the dichotomy of the warmth of the browns, oranges and such with the cooler tones of the green and blue/gray, very, very nice.

However, I'd have gone with more of a somewhat warmer cast to the walls than the gray you have used to offset any gray and dreary days you will have as I've found too much gray can suck the life out of the colors that are there.

But that's just me.

Otherwise, great job overall and it definitely has that 70's vibe thing going, but updated.

The George Nelson clock above my desk is from the Moma Design Store. The clock on our accent wall is from Crate & Barrel, but unfortunately, they no longer carry that model. I know I've seen a very similar clock at mxyplyzyk, but it's not on their website.

The paper trays are from See Jane Work. They also sell coordinated magazine files.

Looks like a professional designer worked on this place - very good. The forms and shapes are represented very well. Color was used nicely in the living room: vivid, but not overpowering. I would have liked to see a touch more of the color from those stripes in the bedroom too. This was well designed.
