Name: Plain Jane
Location: Washington, DC
Type: Studio, Rented 400 square feet
Why I use color:
Interior design is like fashion for your home. I use color to express my individuality and style, which I think is very classic and simple but well accessorized...

My favorite accessories are the oil painting I
did of my friends, the cross stitching my mom made above my desk, the
vintage map above my sofa and of course, my dog Rory, if she counts.

2 Good color tips:
1. Use fresh flowers to introduce color and life into your space. I get mine from the farmers market in Dupont circle weekly.
2. Make sure the colors you use flow with the overall look of your home and contribute to a cohesive feeling.

Favorite type and brand of paint:
Any and all, I'm not picky. I used Duron - Jubilee on my walls. It's
such a soothing color and has such a fun name!

I think you're right about your style, Jane. Very sophisticated and consistent use of color.
Well done!

I think Rory is the best feature by far....and the cutest!
I especially love the R above her bed.
Oh and I like the sunny yellow details in your bedroom.

the little touches here and there really drew me in... like the 'R' on the windowsill, bright yellow curtains, colorful display of jewelry on the walls, even that key holder by the light switch. so cute! the only thing that seems a little bit off to me are the two big empty frames over the bed -- how much nicer they would look if they contained some art!
and i agree. seems like a great entry for the smallest coolest!

home photography tip:
remove electronics before photographing (television etc., alarm clock..) unless they look great and are part of the design. take a look at some interior magazines and notice the lack of these items. it really makes a big difference. nice job otherwise.

I disagree with leahjross.
I think AT is about how we live in our homes... and we live with TV and electronics.
Yeah, if she were going to be featured in a magazine - take them out... but to show us where she LIVES... don't bother unhooking your electronics!!

What we need is some way to jazz up a TV or a stereo that isn't simply putting it into a box of some kind and calling it an armoire. If not fully painting something, doing some kind of stencil maybe, until we can get electronics in great colors (look what going all white did for the Ipod!)

I like the use of yellow and the wall color. The rest isn't working for me.

Wow. So delightfully serene/serenely delightful. I have slightly more space in my 2-room apt than this studio, and it is full to the brim with papers and clutter and things I don't use... I think I need to to visit this page to meditate on your space every day.

Lovely place.

The refreshing pale blue walls make your studio seem airy and spacious. I like your use of patterns - brings a bit of zing to your space, esp. the bedspread and the lampshade in the tulips photo. Also admiring the oil painting of friends... nicely done!

This is a color contest...the colors look muted, nothing matches, looks like hodge podge from a yard sale! The yellow curtains are the only things that I give props on.

I really like you apt and keep coming back to look at the blue walls.
I also like your orange rugs. It has changed my decision on my rug choice.
I love the R for your dog - always wanted one but to "Mary Tyler Moore" but for a dog it is brilliant.

WOW I just noticed the locks on your door. How spooky! Have you been invaded before?
view DAVIDTHOMSEN's profile
Its a cute space, but I'm not quite feeling the colors. None of them seem quite rich enough to carry the contest - although maybe thats the fault of the photography.

Very cute, love the wall color, yellow accents and Rory! I love how it looks like a real person's home. Sometimes some places featured on here look like they fell out of a super styled design magazine, which is great for the people who live there, but it's also nice to be inspired by something I feel is actually attainable for my tiny budget and skills. Great job!

Cute.
I have to agree, after looking at several submissions today and other days, people really should pay more attention to how they take photos. It's one thing to make a nice composition (e.g. dog), and it's yet another to take one that shows how the color *works* a room and how it blends with the next room. I'd be rating some of these submissions (like this one higher), if the photos were more comprehensive of the actual living space, instead of, say, doing a close up of a nicely made bed.

I agree with a previous poster who said, "young and sweet," only I would qualify that by saying your inexpensive little rooms are more inviting and interesting than the huge estates of people with thousands to spend on decorating!
