apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#30 - Artsy Family's Color is for Happiness

Name: Artsy Family
Location: Atlanta, GA
Type: 3 bedroom home, owned

Why I use color:

Honestly, I can't imagine *not* using color. Our home reflects our
family: my husband and I are both very creative and we want to inspire
that in our children as well. Plus, we're happy people. Our home
should reflect that.

2 Good color tips:

• Sometimes it helps to start in one place or with one object in a room and work your way out from there. Once you hang a painting, for instance, you can make a decision about what color should be on the wall behind it. Then, you can decide where to place objects around it. You can just keep working the color in, one object at a time.

• Relax. Let your home be a work in progress. It doesn't all have to happen today, and if you make a mistake today, you can work it out tomorrow. Don't let the anxiety of a decision prevent you from doing something exciting. Take the pressure off yourself, and be patient with the process.

10-23-artsy4.jpg

Favorite type and brand of paint:

oops, I don't think either my husband or I have paid attention to the brand of paint we've used. We were too caught up in finding the right color. We have mostly chosen matte finishes for our home, though.

I really like the colors in your kitchen, and your dining room is lovely. Could you tell me where you got your dining room light fixture?

That first picture alone, wow!

I love how you use textiles to incorporate color; especially how in two rooms the pillows work in tandem with the artwork of the room. Great job.

The way those red chairs pop against the green walls... I really like your place. It seems a bit cold, but is very airy and fresh. Like "St. Elmo's Fire" when Demi Moore's in the empty apartment with the windows open.

My first thought after seeing your pictures was: WOW!

I love so many things about your home: the soothing colors, the red and blue kitchen, the bedroom rug (am now really, really coveting that rug!), and the art in the nursery.

This one definitely goes in my inspiration folder.

That bedroom with the awesome rug and your beautiful kitchen KICKS @$$!!! Totally lovely. Every room seems to impart a sense of calm and yet I can see that people have fun there, and it's lively. The red against the blue in your kitchen is inspiring. I'm repainting my living area a pale blue and want to use bright red accents.

Love that you didn't put a rug in your living room! And I'm also in love with your dining room light fixture.

One small thing...do you really have two of those white stacking cubes (one in living room and one in bedroom)? I hate home decor magazines where you can see that they moved something for different shots.

All in all, an insta-finalist. The bold yet safeness of the kitchen is great.

I know this isn't really regarding the colours, but I love the tilework around your fireplaces. Did you do this yourselves (noticed it's the same in the DR and childs room) or was it existing when you bought the house?

Beautiful floors as well, oh and the colour too ;)

This entry is a model for how to photograph your home. Wow. I guess rule number one is wait for the perfect light-blasted time of day. Is there such thing as a "magic hour" for shooting interiors? Because I think these folks have found it. That white light bursting through the windows really makes the colors glow.

Wonderful job! My favorite part is the glossy cranberry cabinets and the light blue in the kitchen. The combination is really fun and unexpected.

The kid's room is also really hip. I had to look twice before I noticed the subtle wall graphics. I like that this room is colorful and whimsical without being cloying or cutesy.

what a lovely home... I specially like the kitchen, baby's room and the lamp in the first picture... The bedroom looks like a show room photo to me, maybe I am mistaken because I do not see the other side of the room but from what I see it looks like a West Elm Catalog. But I still like the overall apartment choice of colors.

great Job!!!

Does anyone know where to get those white, rounded corner stacking cubes? I swear I've looked everywhere and googled to the ends of the earth but I can't find ones that are just like that (I found some skinnier versions, but nothing as square as what is pictured above).

On topic: I love the kitchen and the nursery the best, the living room is nice but it's just not my style personally.

212 Gretchen - The key to good photographs is to do it midday and to turn the flash off. Sometimes this requires use of a tripod. If you have an older camera you'll need to fiddle with the F-Stop and shutter speed- but most new digital cameras will adjust according to their own light meters. Another helpful tip is to take LOTS of photos. When I shot my place I took about 300 photos and edited down the best ones to about 10-12.

I really hope this wins something. What I love about this space is the range of colors. I for one would have been worried about having green walls in the living room and dining room and then red cabinets in the kitchen. But it somehow magically all works and looks balanced. Great job!

I can't believe I love red cabinets -- I would not have said that before seeing this home. And I also ask, what clutter? This is a home that people (including a baby!?!) live in. On the contrary, some of the first things I noticed were the gleaming floors and the well-edited surfaces.

Oh and I really like the piece of art in the bedroom too. Echoes the grid pattern on your headboard without being too matchy-matchy... I too don't see clutter... I see items like books and baby blankets which say someone lives here, but other than that, I thought it really neat and in place. The only thing I'm not keen on is the art piece above the couch. It has a bit of the eighties flavour for me.

I love everything except the furniture arrangement in the living room. It seems like everything is in a weird semi circle. I guess I'd have to see the rest of the room. The white stacked cube things in front of the bookcase is a little odd and the scale doesn't look right next to that chair.

But as far as color (which this is about right?) its great. I LOVE the red cabinets. What a bold commitment and it paid off. The nursery is awesome too. Well done.

Lovely entry. I like the living room, but think it would work a bit better if the color from the walls were brought down and repeated on the floor -- perhaps in the form of an area rug, and perhaps something similar to the one in the master bedroom. As it is the black leather chair and sofa, along with the walnut-toned floor, are a tad heavy in relationship with the walls and particularly the sheer drapes. Another option might be wood blinds at the windows with black tape trim.

Love the kitchen!

Hey, THANKS for the positive feedback!!

In response to some of the above comments:

The dining room chandelier was purchased from lunawarehouse.com, after searching the entire internet and all of atlanta for the perfect light fixture. That said, it was ridiculously difficult to install. Hire a professional if you were seriously thinking of getting one.

St@cy, we actually do have 2 sets of the nesting cubes. They came as a set of 4, and I split them up :)

The photography... that's my husband. He's a professional, so while the house *wasn't* staged, I can see how it might come off that way.

Laura, I'm totally with you on the furniture arrangement in the living room. It bothers me too. I'm also looking for a rug for that room... it's too brown and green for my taste right now. Any suggestions (under $500)?

The bedroom rug came from Urban Outfitters a couple of years ago. That was before I knew how difficult it is to find a great (and affordable) rug!

And, aweekinparis, I'm definitely aspiring to have some wonderful classic chairs in my dining room one day...

thanks again for all the lovely feedback! Oh, and we live in Grant Park (great neighborhood, by the way, for city-dwellers who need some character and a little space!)

Maybe my favorite entry so far. Amazing use of color. I love how you've been able to pair more saturated colors like the red with softer tones. So many times a room feels too soft or loud because it's so chroma-uniform(?) chroma-static(?). Your home is very inviting and very energetic. I love it.

I'd agree with the too cluttered comments (specifically re: the living room) --it may not be tons of actual "clutter," but there are many different patterns going on... I like the kitchen a lot, but the other rooms seem to have a lot of competing elements.
