apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#33 - Jamie's Pink Argument

Name: Jamie
Location: Raleigh, NC
Type: 3 bedroom home, own!

Why I use color:

I use color to cover up dirt, to give me something to do (ie repaint a lot), to liven up our space and to frighten potential buyers when we sell because every room is a different color.

10-23-foo1.jpg

2 Good color tips:

1) you absolutely positively cannot go wrong with pink (we have a pink guest room, not shown b/c comforter is infested with cat hair currently). its pink, yes, but once you get past that, its so warm and friendly and happy, and pink.

10-23-foo2.jpg

you start by planting a seed. "honey, i'm thinking about painting the guest room PINK!". you'll get a "hunh, really?". then a few weeks later, you bring home some paint samples. then, one saturday, viola, pink room! I'm trying to same tactic for getting a dog.

2) make sure you have lots of time and patience if you want to paint a room red with flat paint.

10-23-foo3.jpg

Favorite type and brand of paint:

Whatever is most convenient, i'm not a snob. BUT, i am going to defintely look into something more environmentally friendly for my next endeavor.

LOVE this. It's boldly colorful without being obnoxious or overwhelming. The light blue in the second picture is my favorite because it's palette-cleansing - refreshing for the eyes, I mean, especially given the red and orange used in the other rooms.

The red dresser in the first pic is beautiful. Did you paint it yourself?

I also love the drape-flokatis-over-everything trick. I do that too. :)

This contest is making me love orange. Damn you all!

Love the rooms and the colors. One question..does each room have its own ikea throw or did you move it into each room?

Love the colors but by the fifth photo I was getting awfully dizzy! Where did you get the "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster in the background?

I am such a huge fan of orange and light blue. I love love love this. You are making me want to toss out all my furniture and start over. Curse you and your sense of style!

lulubarks, if you google it you'll find the poster pretty easily. it has appeared in at least 3 different entries so far!! (And I want one!)

Can we please have a house tour? there are soooo many interesting pieces in your home I want to ask about (not to mention the pink room!!

Love the recurring "M"s too

I love the black and white with the blue background. There are many different animal prints, which are obviously not all from IKEA, but they add a nice theme to the house. I like the repeating M's as well. But maybe thats because I am partial to the letter. Did you paint your front door Carolina blue? It's awesome in contrast to the red walls.

Beautiful house.

Years of schooling and a degree later, I wonder, why the angled photographs?!

Will not judge on photography, will not judge on photography...

Great entry. In my opinion the angled photography should be used in moderation though. A few of these shots would have looked better to me if the shots weren't angled. It reminds me of trying to watch some of the programming on HGTV where they move the camera around too much. Despite that, I love the colors! That red/orange color in the living room is great. Are there 2 different colors or does the lighting change it from red to orange?

hey yal! thanks for the nice comments.

the minute my husband saw the entry, he said "your photography is crap -- why all the angles?"

honestly, i don't know. i just seem to tilt. sort of like when you're talking to someone and you tilt your head. i'm just tilty.

red dresser - mom painted it! she's the best.

ikea throws are in all the rooms. i sort of had a fit with those.
help with cat hair problem b/c cats sit on them!

front door is carolina blue b/c we both went to UNC!

the white bookshelf is from pier 1. imagine that!

Nice - I love the red/light blue contrast also. Question about the crown molding in the livingroom -- what type is it -- or did you something with paint to make it look like that? I like it but I can't figure it out from such a distance.

Okay, I'm in the husband's angled-photo-hating camp (sorry, Jamie!), but I love this entry. The color is really working to tie together all the different styles of furniture and architectural details, without being too matchy. Really nice!

robyn,
its just dental molding. i think ppl usually put up another strip of regular molding, rather than putting the dental directly against the wall like we did. i've got a better picture on my blog. you can email me if you'd like to see. foohqwah @ aol.com

also, art, the shelf brackets came from the container store. VERY easy.

jamie*, I clicked over to your blog and saw the molding. I couldn't see the detail in the photos above, so it looked almost scalloped or lacy to me. I like the way you did it with the white "teeth" so contrasted against the dark paint.

Great space. Good luck in the contest!

Your textiles and furnishings are gorgeous. I really didn't need the diagonal camera angles. I don't think it showcases the room and allows the viewer to take in all the elements. I turned my head on every one so I could take it in.

I know you're trying to be cute with taking photos at crazy angles but along with the italic script it makes me feel seasick as I scroll up and down the page - not nice and its not enhancing the images at all

That said I really like this place - that icy blue wall is gorgeous!

jamie, i've never commented on AT before, but your 'write-up' of your place (especially the pink room conversation) made me laugh out loud in a coffee shop where everyone else is too serious and studying furiously, so i felt compelled to say - rock on! i hope we get to see more and read more funny commentary from you!

I love that this has a sense of humor about it; it's definitely the best written entry. Other photos have probably been equally artful, but the pretentiousness(is that a word?) can be a turn off. Insta-finalist please.

Also Jamie, can you please get rid of the cat hair before the final? We need to see the Pinkness!

The dental molding is gorgeous but I can't help but think it will be a royal pain in the arse when it comes time to re-paint the wall...or the molding for that matter.

I love love love this home! Beautiful! I love the brave use of bold color that is not overwhelming. It is done interestingly. The home is fun, quirky, youthful...and it still obviously had a lot of thought put into it. My favorite pieces are the drums, the "Keep Calm, Carry On" picture, and the cabinet/bar's print (cleverly framed in another room as well). Excellent job.
