apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#4 - Colormyworld's Awakening

Name: Colormyworld
Location: Orlando, Florida
Type: 3 bedroom/2.5 bath ranch style built in 1954

Why I use color:

Color wakes me up. Color sets a mood. Color soothes. Color is alive and vibrant. My office consists of lots of shades of drab gray. When I come home, I want color in my life. I surround myself with it, changing the color palette from time to time...

2 Good color tips:

1. No rules. Whatever pleases you. Go with it.

2. Don't worry if you don't like it. It's just paint. Paint it over.

Favorite type and brand of paint:

I've seen this house before somewhere (the Coca-Cola room specifically) in Atomic Ranch or some other similar magazine and I thought it was really cute and nicely done!

My inner (and outer) New Yorker bristled slightly at this, but hey, it's Orlando. When in Rome and all that. I think it's fab in a kooky way.

I like the brightness, but the colors all remind me of the early 90s. Pee-Wee's Playhouse, for some reason. The kitchen's lovely, though.

oh yay. A fun house.

(And it doesn't make me feel any better about having left my Diet Coke on the cart at Safeway!)

Good call on the Pee Wee's Playhouse, surplusj! Then again, growing up loving that show, this place gives me the warm-and-fuzzies. All it needs is a giant tin foil ball. Fun!

Not a fan of the coca cola theme, but I love the front of the house, and the kitchen is lovely.

I love that you have no fear when it comes to color but I think it looks a little dated.

I love that first pic! I would never think of putting that sofa, chair, and wall color together, but they look great with that rug.

Love the kitchen! Hate the Coca-Cola kitsch (but that's just me--I put it in the category of stuff like Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, Route 66, Three Stooges, James Dean, etc.).

Yup, the palatte reminds me a bit too much of the set of Friends. That 90s thing. That rug in pic #1 isn't helping, either. I was surprised to see so little on the walls in pic #1, and so MUCH on the walls in #2. I think the place would work so much better if the wall art was more tastefully dispersed around the place. Maybe it's because I work in entertainment, but it really looks like a sitcom set to me.

That said, I love to see someone with such a specific aesthetic create a really finished, polished looking place. Maybe that's why it looks like a set - everything looks really deliberate (the different colored walls, etc). It's not my thing, but it's still an achievement.

So many strong colors all on top of each other, with no relief. Lots of broad strokes in the furniture and decoration choices, but with no finer details. Even something like neutral throw pillows instead of the matchy-matchy ones you have on the couch would break it up a little bit better. And yet in the kitchen, the one room in your house where you have lots of beautiful pale, blank space via the cabinets, you go with a safe green. Overall, it's a beautiful palette, but it doesn't feel like anything flows together, instead it's just blocks of color jammed in next to each other.

I like the palette a lot! Not such a big fan of the Coke theme everywhere, but that's really a matter of personal taste.

I think it's very nice.

That purple wall and that rust-colored couch together made me throw up in my mouth a little. And that rug needs to be tossed out along with the Nagel lithographs. I have to agree that this house seems to be stuck in a late 80s - early 90s timewarp. However, the kitchen and exterior are very nicely done.

Hailing from Orlando as well (I believe in one of the similiarly distinct 'historic Florida' hoods of the above entrant) and all I ask is that you do not judge our city by the above Pee-Wee's Playhouse abomination.
Seriously...we may be a bit backwoods, but some of us still believe in collecting colors and furnishing with a bit of history, quality, originality, and no god-forsaken-Rooms-To-Go pricetags attached.
I shudder....oh how I shudder and shall lay awake tonight guarding myself behind my mission era teak sideboard shrouded in coral dupioni silk.....

so sad that as a lurker of 3 years the above entry is what forced me to register.....

Uggg... I'm all for collecting - but to brand my entire home as one giant advertising is a little much. This looks more like a CocaCola museum rather than a home (with the exception of the first and kitchen pics). Those two pics show a little bit more of your personality, and a little restraint and deliberation with your color use.

Hey, I wonder if the look were mid 20th C instead of the 90s there would be the same degree of dislike as the comments suggest. . . . But I really like the colors--especially in the first picture and in the Coke room. And mmmm, the greeny-ness of the glass brick with the other colors.

Some people are just stuck in the trendy, me too world of calm warm shades of gray or chocolate brown everything (West Elm). I admire this couple for doing what pleases them, not what pleases someone else or what the trend is. Some comments here are brutal if not down right rude. Collecting Coca-Cola memorabilia is a passion for some select individuals just like some who collects lunch boxes, snow globes or Barbie dolls. What a person collects shouldn't reflect on his home taste. It appears from the photos, that they have one room devoted to their Coke collection. The others are colorful extensions of that room. I'm personally tired of seeing the furniture, colors and styles mimicked at so many stores (Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Bo Concept, West Elm, Pier One). Kudos to this couple/person for coloring their own world as they please.

I totally agree with whatisthat. The contest is about using color and one can comment that these particular colors don't appeal to them without being snide. I found several of the comments loaded with pretentiousness as if the writers thought they were trained interior designers....

umm...a few are...in their own minds probably.
Interior design is one persons (professional) opinion as to how an interior should look and feel. Much like an artist. Ask a dozen "Interior Designers" to design a room and you'll get two dozen answers. None which are right or wrong. Again, it's only an opinion.

I forget; is this a contest about color or a forum for snide remarks and biased opinions? Suddenly, I have very little respect for the "trained" interior designers, especially the ones submitting their harsh comments on this website.

Whatizthat: you go, girl! (or,"guy"?)

It's an intimate thing to invite people into your home, and to post it here in among strangers is an act of good faith. I wonder if some of the sleezy critics here would say the same things if they were really, actually invited in. If they behaved that way in my home, they'd be out in the street on their keisters before they knew what hit them.

Thank you all...for your comments; however "brutally honest" you can be. Most of you are right...on target about the Pee Wees Playhouse. I sometimes referred to my home as Nickelodeon; too much bold colors. And I am in the process of "updating" the look. For those that asked about the colors, unfortunately (or fortunately), I didn't keep records. I still love the green in my living room, but decided to lose the purple wall and that rug! I'm toning down the lime green to a soft sage green. I'm purchasing half of West Elm's furniture of chocolate brown and beige sofas. I ordered a rectangular dining table in chocolate brown with 6 dining chairs from another source and having the seat cushions in sage green too. Also removing the Coca-Cola memorabilia and keeping it all in the Coke room (the room with the CC logo on the rug). Color is trendy one year and like the seasons, changes quickly. I was stuck in the 90's; I'll admit. I entered this contest because I felt my home was truly a "Bold, beautiful and colorful home." Again, thanks for your comments and suggestions. Have a nice day. Ray

I like your house, but it seems disingenuous to me to make positive comments about your own space and critical comments on other entries under an assumed name, and then criticize others for criticizing your taste....Thanks to AT for changing your fake user name back to your real name.

These contests always seem to bring out some mean-spirited critics....if you have the b*lls to enter you must have a tough enough skin not to let the criticism get to you....still not very honest to criticize the other entrants. My personal opinion is that all entrants should refrain from comments on their own and other spaces except to answer specific technical questions about sources & colors. It should be in the rules!
