apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#6 - Amber in Norfolk's Tiffany Smile

Name: Amber in Norfolk
Location: Norfolk, Va
Type: It's a 1000 sq. foot house, which I own

Why I use color:

When I set up my craft room, I wanted a space that was full of energy and would inspire me to create. I love this aqua/Tiffany blue-ish color. Every time I walk in the room it makes me smile...

My "artlines" (which are really curtain hardware from IKEA) let me inject bright bursts of color and art in a changeable display. I love the touches of color in all my little handmade & vintage details around the room too.

2 Good color tips:

Don't be afraid of bright color. Figure out what works together and try it - you can always repaint.

Find a photograph or painting that really speaks to you and use that as an inspiration for your palette. There's a reason why it speaks to you - the color is working. Steal!

Favorite type and brand of paint:

So far I really like the American Tradition brand from Lowes. I haven't really tried any fancy paint.

Love it! Very cool and quirky, but totally in a good quirky way.

That is one very well organized corner! While I don't think I'd like walking into a Tiffany box regularly, I think it's great that you've found a lovely color that makes you happy.

So clean and fresh, I actually like the idea of the curtain hardware from IKEA - it turned into a decorative art for a small room. Lovely!

I once had an art professor walk up to a painting I was working on, stare at it for a few moments, then say ".....its very....blue". Then he turned heel and walked away.

This is a wonderful start...but not enough to win the competition. You've repeated lots of photos of the blue room - but shown no other space in your house.

One tip - beware of colors that are similar. In the 4th photo you show how vibrant colors can work well together, but in the first photo you've got a creamy lamp, a light wood table, and a light cream sheepskin. They're all in the same color family - but not different enough to 'coordinate' and too different to 'match'.

I love the color, and I think its a great use of it. The room is for creative purposes, and I suspect that is exactly what it inspires: creativity. And I love that the open shelving allows all the vibrant colors of the yarns and goodies to be on display.

Saccharine, but I like it. It reminds me quite a bit of another craft room that was featured on (I think) this same site...does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Mmadden, I agree, I've seen it featured somewhere as well. Whether that was livejournal, flickr, here, or elsewhere, I don't know.

AMBER! This is EXACTLY the color i've been looking to put on my walls, but have failed (all the paint chips look too muted and not bright enough). PLEASE share what paint you used! :)

I was going to say that too! That Morrissey print is to die for ... so clever! Did you do it?

And yeah, I've seen a LOT of craft rooms in this color scheme but that's not exactly a bad thing. I just think it's a (perhaps unconscious) ode to years and years of Martha Stewart craft catalogs and magazines etc. floating out there with these same colors. (Again, not exactly a bad thing. No pun intended, I swear) ;-)

mh330 - it's American Tradition "Sea Wave" from Lowes.

And thanks on the Morrissey print. It's by a local artist, Doug Clarke.

I did my dining room in this color with silver accents and it gets rave revue's. I'll rave on about yours now, too. This color opens your space up and if it were any other room I'd say it's too much, but all the personal touches make it a hot creative spot. Love it.

This is only one room, and it seems like the other entries feature the whole living space?

since when did this contest have to feature your whole house/apartment?? I love this colour, but agree that a bright paint on the walls isn't enough to win this contest when there are so many spaces with more innovation.

oh and hey MODFAN - for those who've been reading this site and following this contest for years, it's usually only been about one room. it's not really clear in the rules this year that pictures should be submitted for one room or for the whole home. in the past people have submitted single rooms and won... so i think it's still ok.

Nice colors - but I don't see how this fits with the contest's Fall Colors theme.

Oliviahh - it's fall colors contest, not fall colors-themed contest. They just hold it in the fall.

And yeah, to everyone who wanted to see the whole house, last year's was just one room. I didn't even notice this was a whole house thing! If you want to see more color, you can go here.

Everything is too small, needs some large pieces to give presence. The kitchen chair at the piano made me cringe, although I love the artwork above. STUFFED ANIMALS? What are you, 12? Time to put them in the closet.

Piano? That's a sewing machine. Also the stuffed animals are A) vintage snoopy dolls from my childhood and B) handmade plush by working artists. So I'll keep em, thanks.

AngeLune - I've been a fan of the colors contest for a few years now - what I meant was in this entry we've got lots of the same type of photographs: closeups or head ons. No shots of the space leading into the craft room, no wide angle to show us a couple of walls, nothing more than the individual elements interacting with the blue walls. The one tiny bit of floor we see shows a warm wood, like a pine or oak. That orangy color would balance out the overwhelming blue a little bit if we could see more of it!

I love the color of the room and the elements it is nice to see rooms that do not fit the norm of what everyone else is doing and I feel the warmth and quirkiness of the room and i believe it definitely would help with my creativity, however I do agree with Modfan's comments about shooting the room from different angles and getting a bit of the floor and the doorway into the room it would really make a difference and open up the room to give people an idea of the size of the actually space and probably giving you a better chance a winning....wishing you the best :).
