Fall Colors East Finalist #1: Andrew & Karen's Contrasting Condo

Here is the first of our 4 eastern finalists. Our judges are making the final decisions, but your comments can help them out. Remember, everyone is a winner at AT ;-)...

Name: Karen & Andrew
Location: Cambridge, MA
Type: 2 bedroom, owned
Go to: Karen & Andrew's Original Entry

11-9-dereksmall.jpgKaren & Andrew's favorite OTHER entry:

Our favorite other entry was Derek's Earthy Blank Canvas (#6 om AT SF). We love tranquility of the warm neutral tones and the way he created a modern space from natural colors and materials...

If you lived in a white house, and you only had one color to play with, what would it be, how would you use it and why?:

If we lived in a white house and could only use one other color, we
would use a walnut-brown color. That would allow us to bring some
wood and leather into the house and warm the place up. A bright color
would be nice, but with only white to contrast against we think it
would just be too overwhelming.

We'd probably pick a room or two to leave 100% white. I've wanted to try that for a couple years but it's simply impossible - some essential items are hard to find in white.

Just lovely. It's well-planned and very well executed, but doesn't feel like a showroom (or a staged catalog set). Everything is airy and open, you've taken wonderful advantage of all the light, and the little touches and finishing details (like the painted scroll work and the synergy between your placemats and the green chair's pillow) are just enough to seem effortless and steer clear of contrived. On top of all that, your shots are gorgeous (and I'm jealous of your bar - what a great piece!).

I love those fabric panels in the bedroom. When I saw them in the still pictures, I thought they were just wall adornments, but as explained in the video, they also slide to cover the windows. Lovely and multi-functional. As for the rest of the place, I second all of freneticfloetry's comments!

What's most impressive is how well edited this place is. It seems like a simple concept, but is rarely ever executed as beautifully as this.

Beautiful! (You will be hearing this a lot today).

Beautiful photographs. They really show your place off well.

I'd love to know where you got that fabric for your bedroom panels. Hanginging them on rails is ingenius--turns the curtains into artwork when pulled back.

I love how you've exploited the concept of the accent wall so well. Each wall keeps drawing you into the room without overwhelming it and keeps the colour story moving along throughout the house.

Brilliant.

You have beautiful light in the house. The house must be very happy to have so much love and attention.

After viewing the additional photos and video, I think that this home is even more wonderful than I originally thought. The decorating, furniture, and arrangements are beautiful, yet the total effect is very inviting. I want to live here.

The moldings and colors on the walls look superb—a first-rate job. Are those orig moldings?

I love it, you guys are so creative! The curtains are genius and I love all the natural light too.

I love it. That's the sort of look I want when we buy a house--right now we're living in a too-small, overstuffed apartment. But I like all the bright, saturated colors interspersed with pale neutrals and strong wood tones. Love the gray wall with the scrollwork, the blue wall with the display case, and I would have thought I'd hate that grass-green wall in the kitchen, but I love it. The red chairs are wonderful also.

Hmm, none (well, almost none) of those comments seem to be commenting on color...

another non-color related comment, but we used that scroll pattern on our diy wedding invitations :) i have to love that element!

that being said, i'm also a fan of the green accent in the kitchen (do agree that it's a preview of what's outside) and the various greys throughout the condo.

What color green is that? I may have to steal that for my kitchen.

Absolutely beautiful floors. What a gleam, they are in perfect shape, surely they are recently redone, and you can't possibly have any pets!

And...way to hide the electric cords!

This was my favorite from the beginning of the contest. I LOVE the colors. It's a great balance of neutrals and vibrant colors, very complementary.

What color is on the living rooms walls? It's just the shade of gray I'd like to use in our living room.

Also would love to know what the light fixture in the foyer is, love the shape and how bright it is. And where you got the hooks in the foyer.

I hope this one wins.

They're either newlyweds or not married, because no woman past the honeymoon phase is going to let a man keep his tee shirts in the kitchen.

Simple, and tied together in a real-person's-home kind of way. I get lots of good ideas from looking at their home.

I really like the use of color in this place. Gives it a warm and cozy feel but with a modern edge. This entry should win.

I am loving you respresent Boston. I am local and would love to come to the next dinner party ;)

This is great. The colors are beautiful singly and together.
Spring and fall fabrics is a great idea, too.
I agree, they deserve to win.

Theambershow missed the video. the tshirts are a Business.

This is hot. The occupants really thought through each element, and it shows. I still love the gray wall with the white graphic, and those red dining chairs are killer. Their low, slim profile is nice and casual, and red is such a perfect color for an eating area.

This has been my favorite throughout the contest, and the slideshow only confirms my opinion. The colors are bright and inviting without being garish or gimicky. I admire the way you've used different colors in each room that all work well together in the final shot where we can see all three rooms. I also love the seasonal switch of colors in the living room.

What really sells me, though, is that while some of the other entries look (to my eyes) like colorful showrooms, this looks like a colorful home. I would love to live here, and I hope you win.

i can't figure out if i like this one so much because it's nice and open with great lighting and great moldings.

what i think is great here is that it's not boring with the fun artwork, the colorful details like the placemats and chairs and the shoe thing in the entry way. and i absolutely love the scroll.

i absolutely love this place i really do. i'm just not sure if it calls out to me of being a color contest winner like some of the other entries do.

Just realized I posted this under the original entry......here it goes again.

I know the contest has ended....still think you should have won. I was wondering if you had a Flickr account so we can see some more of your really cool home.
