East #18: Emily & Andrew's Color & Whimsy

10-7-fc18-ny-19.jpg

fallcolors3.jpgName: Emily & Andrew
Location: Hamburg, NJ
Type of Home: rental apartment
What inspired you to use color? The true inspiration to use color came from the colors of the things we love to collect! All the vibrant colors of nostalgic dishes, curtains, linens, & books truly is the inspiration to use color in our otherwise dull rental. Not being able to paint the walls and vertical blinds *gasp* is not exactly a dream backdrop so we tried to take the focus off those & bring color and whimsy to other areas!...

Color Tip: Draw colors from existing pieces you love!

Fall Colors Introduction -------------------------------

fallcolors1.jpgWelcome, everyone, to our Fourth Annual Fall Colors Sharing & Contest. We're looking for the most beautiful & colorful home in the world and sharing all of the great ideas we get with our readers. This year we're amping things up and hoping to do things better than ever. There are two basic phases, the Sharing Phase and the Voting Phase...

1. Sharing Phase - you comment, judges decide

The 40 best, completed entries will be posted on a daily basis for three weeks. You can view them all at anytime via our new, improved contest pages under ALL ENTRIES. During this time your comments are VERY IMPORTANT as our six judges will be choosing 16 finalists from each region based on comments and their own colorful opinion.

2. Voting Phase - you vote till you drop

Starting October 20th, finalist voting will begin on a daily basis through our new bracketed voting system, which will pit our 16 finalists against one another until only one remains. Sound exciting? We hope so.

Best, Maxwell

Your place is so cute. I think this is a good example of how you can use color without painting every wall in your house.

Your bedroom is adorable. You should try and incorporate more of that in the rest of your home. Almost there with the kitchen but the living room looks out of place. Still, I really like this.

While it is true that white is a combination of all colors - I dont think that counts here in the contest. Lol.

Your collection of objects is wonderful and colorful - but what is lacking is some sort of larger connector - such as one accent wall. However, I know being a renter sucks in that you cannot always paint your walls. But you can do great things with fabrics, textures, artwork, frames etc.

Very girly home. It's nice to score a few vintage pieces of charm, but I'm not a big fan of getting stuck in the rut.

I like the bedroom. The kitchen too. Not a fan of the living room. Get MORE vintage pieces of charm. It's a rut more people should get into!

(The rut they should get out of is going to IKEA and buying junk furniture.)

It's beautiful! Since you can't paint the walls (or change the window treatments!), the color you've added softens the look of the whole place. I didn't even notice the wall color until i read a different comment!

Although I'm convinced there had to have been some way to at least temporarily paint something that could have been re-painted, I think this really is a clever use of color without painting color on the wall.

You proved that you don't have to go overboard with bold colors, subtle and just enough color brings out your talent and love of very interesting collectibles. It was a delight to go from room to room. It gave me a very warm feeling and brought a smile to my face. I loved it!

I'm really not seeing a strong colour story other than some than all your cutey collectables that just seem to clutter up the place.

I personally think that this home is beautiful in its own way and that the renters did their best to decorate given the limitation of being a 'renter'. The light colors offer a simplistic fall style home. Not all homes should bombard you with colors that scream fall. That can be so overdone and overwhelming. I find it creative how they used color in other ways such as in items and objects rather than coloring their walls with such bright and dark colors. Great Job!!

oh my goodness, dress mannequins on display make me happy. as does your ability to make colorful clutter appear organized and in exactly the right places. it's calming for the adhd ocd soul.

There is color here. But no purposeful USE of color here. Not really fitting in the spirit of this contest.
