East #34: K, L & M's Eclectic Collection

fallcolors4.jpgName: K, L & M's eclectic collection
Location: Brooklyn, NY
Type of Home: rental apartment
What inspired you to use color? Fresh out of school and fresh out of $$, in a cheap, bland apartment (that we could not paint) we expressed our love of color with inexpensive flea market finds, lots of free junk scavenged off the streets of NYC, and a few odds and ends from friends. The collage of our place expresses our many moods and passion for 'recycling'...

Color Tip: Have fun with it. Let your life experiences show in the things around you.

Fall Colors Introduction -------------------------------

fallcolors1.jpgWelcome, everyone, to our Fourth Annual Fall Colors Sharing & Contest. We're looking for the most beautiful & colorful home in the world and sharing all of the great ideas we get with our readers. This year we're amping things up and hoping to do things better than ever. There are two basic phases, the Sharing Phase and the Voting Phase...

1. Sharing Phase - you comment, judges decide

The 40 best, completed entries will be posted on a daily basis for three weeks. You can view them all at anytime via our new, improved contest pages under ALL ENTRIES. During this time your comments are VERY IMPORTANT as our six judges will be choosing 16 finalists from each region based on comments and their own colorful opinion.

2. Voting Phase - you vote till you drop

Starting October 20th, finalist voting will begin on a daily basis through our new bracketed voting system, which will pit our 16 finalists against one another until only one remains. Sound exciting? We hope so.

Best, Maxwell

Yes! This is what we need more of! Doesn't look (nor actually is it!) sponsored by Dwell or Tomb&Bored. Original, simple, and fun. Best yet.

There are so many vignettes, I can't get a feel for the apartment as a whole. I'm just seeing a lot of dishware and a bright shower curtain....

Great colors and an inventive use of a limited budget! I agree with the complaint about vignettes [although they're lovely]. Plus, the 2-in-1 image seems like a bit of a cheat.

i agree...too many vignettes. I liked what I saw, just wished I could have seen more of the space to really give an opinion.

Love it! The school desks are amazing exta storage if needed! I also love the use of multi color vs. monochromatic color on the different shelves.
Very unique!

okay, one of my faves so far. i agree with amt230: doesn't look like the cover of a magazine, sponsored by some giant retail company. ingenious, great repurposing, fun, bright, and LOTS of personality. fabulous

amt230, that made me laugh. so true!

i do agree about the vignettes.

i really like the way you've worked on a budget. arranging your things by color really helps it seem less cluttered.

Considering your restrictions, you know color. I expect in the future when your bank balance has recovered you will have some truly (and deliciously) colorful homes to share.

Well, K, L & M are on a budget. But how does that justify collecting a rack of expensive art books with the exact same shade of blue on their covers? I need storage for my books, so I am always interested in fresh ideas. One idea I don't need is to group my books according to the color of their spines.

The grouping of the old school desks is interesting but a little too reminiscent of the unhappy days of junior high.

The collection of colored dinnerware is visually appealing as a whole, but somewhat dismaying when you see the details of the dishware.

Since this is an apartment in Brooklyn, I would suspect the square feet are limited. How do visitors visually separate two cobalt blue arrangements, some interesting splashes of orange and red, and a meditative spot in black and white?

I don't get featuring the shower curtain as reflected by the bathroom mirror. I get it; it's a gaily striped shower curtain doubled by a mirror! But the curtain is hardly anything special and the bathroom otherwise is not of interest. Reality check: I doubt that people visiting the bathroom are spending time admiring the shower curtain's reflection in the mirror unless they are also toking up.

I'm looking forward to the day when K, L, and M can each afford his or her own apartment. We may see three interesting -- and different -- colorists emerge.

Good job for decorating with little money. It's nice to see an entry not based on expensive finds! Very creative use of school desks.
