fallcolors1.jpgName: Lori Kaplan
Location: NYC
Type of Home: 1 Bedroom Rental Apartment
What inspired you to use color? the dusty purple paint chip! I have always used bright oranges and yellows but I wanted something calmer...purple and silver blues. After the paint chip find I fell in love with the yolk yellow CB2 table. It went on from there!

Color Tip: Buy what you love, somehow it'll all work out!
Colors Used: BM Tropical Dusk & Restoration Hardware Silver Sage.

Fall Colors Introduction -------------------------------

fallcolors1.jpgWelcome, everyone, to our Fourth Annual Fall Colors Sharing & Contest. We're looking for the most beautiful & colorful home in the world and sharing all of the great ideas we get with our readers. This year we're amping things up and hoping to do things better than ever. There are two basic phases, the Sharing Phase and the Voting Phase...

1. Sharing Phase - you comment, judges decide

The 40 best, completed entries will be posted on a daily basis for three weeks. You can view them all at anytime via our new, improved contest pages under ALL ENTRIES. During this time your comments are VERY IMPORTANT as our six judges will be choosing 16 finalists from each region based on comments and their own colorful opinion.

2. Voting Phase - you vote till you drop

Starting October 20th, finalist voting will begin on a daily basis through our new bracketed voting system, which will pit our 16 finalists against one another until only one remains. Sound exciting? We hope so.

Best, Maxwell

I love the 3 large b&w photos. The borderless look is effortless with the intimate snapshots.

Sorry, but I'm not really into the purple, especially the way it clashes with yellow and red...

Thanks for all the positive feedback. To answer some of the questions: the TV Console is, believe it or not, from Ikea. It also comes in red and white. The bedroom linen is from Restoration Hardware but the lamps I made up myself. I bought the bases separately from the shades. The B&W photos are of me and my family when I was about 12. My Uncle did those and they always hung at my Mom's house. She let me have them!

That first photo is sorta...I dunno...that carpet and the wall color (which is lovely in and of itself) and the acid yellow table (which I also love) and the bruise-y couch and the red pillows. I have to agree with LuckyMonkey, it clashes. The tv console seems a bit too long as well. All the photos are lovely, though.

Purple and yellow are complimentary colors. They are supposed to clash. They are accents. That's the whole point -- it's a risk, it's a surprise. Red is part of purple, it's in it's own family. These are basic color principals. Nothing is expected. This is the fun of playing with color. But that's why there's chocolate and vanilla ice creams. Sorry not to please some :)

The ceramic babushka on the counter is an adorable touch. I applaud your judicious use of strong color, which seems to enhance rather than belittle the space (have you seen rooms painted red? It's like the walls are closing in on you). The bedroom truly achieves a welcome calmness that I'd like to crawl into right now.

I love the color palette you chose - the colors compliment each other in such an interesting and unexpected way, and are tied together in such creative ways - the red lampshades and the red pillows on your barstools for example. The whole aparment has such clean lines and such a modern - and still cozy - look to it, you really did an amazing job.

I love the composition of the colors --- soothing, fun, exciting, and yet very balanced. The pillows with red, gold, and violet play with the color scheme and there is a definite charm with the b/w family framed photos. Can I switch apartments with you?!

I love the contrast between the soft comfy fabrics and the straight lines of the pictures and the lamp shades in the bedroom. Also the pictures are lovely and they bring depth to the apartment. The dusty purple and silver colors are very soothing and I find the accents in yellow and red add interest and energy without being overpowering. I especially like the fact that the bedroom and living room are subtley related but give you a feeling of two unique environments. I'm ready to move in. Great job!!!

I LOVE IT!! I think the purpley-blue with the bright, bold yellow looks amazing! I'm also a huge fan of the bar stools and accompanying cushions. And the photos - looks like your family is just as funky and cool as your apartment, citigirl! Living in an apartment that beautiful would make me feel happy all of the time...

I really love the lamps & the yellow table.
Also, the contrast of the black and white photos surrounded by color makes it all the more interesting.

Your use of color is truly inspired. I love it! Especially the red accents, the yellow side table & the beautiful plum walls. Wonderful work.

Having been in the apt. I can confirm that the colors truly evoke bold and calm moments, as several comments here have said, in the respective areas of the apt. The bedroom’s sage color is amazing. The b&w family photos are works of art and brought to mind my own family memories from that time. I thought the small pillows on the white stools were sold with the chairs. I found out that the pillows were a separate purchase! They definitely look like they were made for the chairs. The shape of the amazingly colored yolk CB2 table is awesome.
