East #55: Elizabeth and Kevin's Cool Shades

10-15-fc08-ny-55.jpg

fallcolors2.jpgName: Elizabeth and Kevin
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Type of Home: house

What inspired you to use color? Kevin and I wanted to create a bright and airy space, so we went with cool shades of grays and blues for the walls throughout the house. Being our first home together, it was important to me that the colors reflected both of our personalities as well - too girly would not have pleased Kevin, too masculine would not have pleased me...

The wall colors we chose work for both of us, and then we were able to bring boldness to the spaces with our choices in accessories. Again, cooler tones like turquoise, green and yellow prevail, but with an occasional pop of fuchsia and lilac (because I can't help myself!)
Color Tip: If you have a smallish space, try to work within a single color family to create cohesiveness. Or choose a signature color (such as the turquoise in our house) to create a continuous theme from room to room.

Fall Colors Introduction -------------------------------

fallcolors1.jpgWelcome, everyone, to our Fourth Annual Fall Colors Sharing & Contest. We're looking for the most beautiful & colorful home in the world and sharing all of the great ideas we get with our readers. This year we're amping things up and hoping to do things better than ever. There are two basic phases, the Sharing Phase and the Voting Phase...

1. Sharing Phase - you comment, judges decide

The 40 best, completed entries will be posted on a daily basis for three weeks. You can view them all at anytime via our new, improved contest pages under ALL ENTRIES. During this time your comments are VERY IMPORTANT as our six judges will be choosing 16 finalists from each region based on comments and their own colorful opinion.

2. Voting Phase - you vote till you drop

Starting October 20th, finalist voting will begin on a daily basis through our new bracketed voting system, which will pit our 16 finalists against one another until only one remains. Sound exciting? We hope so.

Best, Maxwell

This is one of my favorites so far. I think you have some really beautiful pieces and a great eye for scale and appropriate grouping of objects.

I am crazy about those crystal or glass candlesticks on the coffee table.

I would love more if the photos were turned the right way (hint).

Would you mind telling us where the cool nightstand/daybed combo (with the lounging cat) comes from?

Thanks so much to everyone for such nice comments!

Atlantadesigner: I purchased the ottoman at a vintage store and recovered it in an inexpensive cotton twill zebra fabric...

Susu: The daybed w/ attached end table was from Ikea, but I believe they discontinued the style

Craftypants: The wallcolor in the livingroom is Valspar "Rising Tide"

Alitris: Sorry if the pics weren't oriented properly! They were fine when I sent them, but then I have a feeling my Mac might flip them for me automatically...

Love the muted wall color in contrast with the warmness of the wood floors. Great use of accessories of varying colors, heights, textures. Your tabletops are fantastic.

I really like the gold-framed, round wall mirror, the quirky Knickknacks and the colorful throws and pillows. I also love that your house looks lived-in rather than staged. And finally go Phillies!!!!!! Phillie represent!!!!

I love the placement of the pictures on the living room wall. The whole place feels warm, clean, and cozy w/out feeling staged. I think it's tricky to balance a wide tv. If the lamp were taller I think the proportion would feel better. Don't mean to critical. I love your place! It's beautiful!

LOVE the gold mirror! And, when looking at the stacks of books on your console, I definitely read one of the titles as "Bestiality"
