East #9: Janice's 'Color My World Beautiful'

fallcolors1.jpgName: Janice
Location: Yonkers, NY
Type of Home: One Bedroom Co-op
What inspired you to use color? Color exudes life and I can hardly imagine a day without the kind of happiness and charm that a multi-colored room brings to my world...

Color Tip: Color can happen to walls in so many interesting ways. I like to frequent my local art supply store and buy large inexpensive blank canvases and cover them with colorful thick acrylic paint.
Colors Used: Cherry, lime, melon, grape blueberry and lemon.

Fall Colors Introduction -------------------------------

fallcolors1.jpgWelcome, everyone, to our Fourth Annual Fall Colors Sharing & Contest. We're looking for the most beautiful & colorful home in the world and sharing all of the great ideas we get with our readers. This year we're amping things up and hoping to do things better than ever. There are two basic phases, the Sharing Phase and the Voting Phase...

1. Sharing Phase - you comment, judges decide

The 40 best, completed entries will be posted on a daily basis for three weeks. You can view them all at anytime via our new, improved contest pages under ALL ENTRIES. During this time your comments are VERY IMPORTANT as our six judges will be choosing 16 finalists from each region based on comments and their own colorful opinion.

2. Voting Phase - you vote till you drop

Starting October 20th, finalist voting will begin on a daily basis through our new bracketed voting system, which will pit our 16 finalists against one another until only one remains. Sound exciting? We hope so.

Best, Maxwell

I think this might be my favorite so far. I just love all the bright colors. I am also jealous the bed. It almost makes me like the white walls!

It takes a lot of skill, I think, to combine so many different colors. You've got a real talent for it! Your home is very inviting because of it. :)

This one is my favorite so far as well. It doesn't hurt that it's been beautifully photographed.

I realize I'm also drawn to all the plants since I've been trying to grow my own collection lately..

It's certainly a beautiful home over-all. In terms of color though, I'm not sure. I'm not getting a cohesive sense of how the color works on the larger scale. There are a lot of pictures of the same room with the same painting on the wall (which is lovely btw) and the same set of mismatched chairs at the table (which i think are great.).

I'm not saying it's a no, I just wish there were less vingettes and photos of the same room. I might have a better idea of whether this was a winner or not if I had a bigger picture.

I can imagine a sunday after noon coming in from a fall walk surrounded by the continuation of dancing colors and vibrance. I would brew some tea and ask you..."can you teach..can you learn me the ways in which you follow a pattern of making what you desire as art and emotion before us....but before me"
YOUR INSPIRING even without words!

I love the color contrasts. Living in the city and not being acquainted with Yonkers quite yet, the view through windows of trees and earth is nothing less than a breath of fresh air. I am completely intrigued by these photos and appreciate the use of light and space.

Charming. I think this is my favorite of the ones where wall color isn't used. The accents of color are used so successfully. If feels tasteful, yet whimsical.

Gorgeous! I love the mix of colors, textures, fabrics here - it's very inviting and I'm the slightest bit jealous...eyeing our house with new directions in mind now. Beautiful work - wins my vote.

Not a fan of the shower curtain. It seems childish in a way I don't necessarily like, though I often like quirky/whimsical touches in decor. It does seem like an airy, open, happy place to live though.

I love this apartment! As a home decor fanatic, this is the type of home that catches my eye it is not a cookie cutter version of what every other apartment looks like. Each piece of furniture and artwork looks like it was lovingly collected over a period of years and is thoughtfully and beautifully arranged. The colors have a playful boldness to them. My favorite shot is of the orange flowers in the foreground and the table and sitting chair in the background. Such an inviting and interesting image. Paying homage to fall colors, the orange flowers appear again in the bathroom on the shower ledge. Love the thruline of this incredible apartment.

What a beautiful combination of bold and modern and funky and much-beloved. I love that the color comes from the furniture and accessories and not the walls (I hate to paint). It so reminds me of Mexico and the Bahamas, it's all about color. I must say, If I lived in that co-op I'd never leave the dining room table. It's the epitome of everything I want in a space: cozy, yet open and bright. I may have to steal some ideas from this place.

It has a restrained and calm quality. Usually I would associate "colorful" with bold and fiery personalities, and I'm just starting to look over the entries right now. I like how the power of color in this space is treated as a positive and welcoming element without having to shout to prove itself. It's cool, it doesn't have to do that thing everyone calls "pop" to recall some page in a magazine everyone already saw five years ago. Pretty is the word, not precocious.

An oasis of warmth with personality in every room. A place of simply and creativity. The wood and textures within each photo are impressive, inviting, secure.

Dear Red Dirt Girl
The pictures are lovely. You have a subtle eye that captures something simple but elusive in a common scene. I like the contrast between the warm rich tones of the living room and the cool soft hues of the bedroom. I like your new shower curtain too!

I love the use of natural light. Colors softly entice and woodgrain shows its character, so beautifully. There is happiness and contentment that says, "Here I am, confident in myself, having weathered storms of life, gaining character and understanding, so that I now relax, and enjoy being who I am at this moment."

Lovely home with balanced and bright colors. There are many patterns and lovely patinas to look at as well that are layered over the color. Love it.
